Malone is a native of Winnetka, Illinois, and a product of the New Trier High powerhouse. He served as a three-time captain at USC, the first in program history, and graduated in 2017. As a Trojan, he won two NCAA championships with relays, including a heroic turn on the anchor leg of 800 freestyle relay at the 2015 championships. Malone was a seven-time All-American and won five Pac-12 championships, including the 200 and 500 free as a junior.

Malone was 10th in the 400 free and 15th in the 200 free at the 2016 Trials. He finished 17th at the 2012 Trials in the 400 free at age 17.

He’s swum internationally since the 2011 World Junior Championships. Malone won gold in the 200 free at the World University Games in 2015 in Gwangju to go with bronze in the 400 free and gold in the 800 free relay. That summer, he was part of the squad at the World Championships (with Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Michael Weiss in finals) that won silver in the 800 free relay.
