Alabama swimmer Derek Maas was named the recipient of the NCAA’s Elite 90 award on day two of the 2023 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis.

The Elite 90 award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 90 championships. This latest honor comes on the heels of Maas earning his third-consecutive CSC Academic All-American honors, in addition to bringing home the SEC Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors last month.

Maas’ recognition marks the 17th time an Alabama student-athlete has earned the prestigious honor and the first time a Crimson Tide swimmer has won the award.

In the pool, Maas broke the Alabama school record in the 200 individual medley during Thursday’s prelim session. At the conclusion of day two, the Crimson Tide sit in 16th-place in the team standings with 26 points.

Maas posted a new school-record in the 200 individual medley during Thursday’s prelims session, clocking a 1:42.59 to take 18th
