3 National Age Group Records Broken First Night of Speedo Tom Dolan Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, December 13. THREE National Age Group Records fell on the first night of finals at the 2013 Speedo Tom Dolan Invitational. The meet, hosted by Nation’s Capital Swim Club, and held at the University of Maryland pool, seems to be the playground of talented age group swimmers.

Last year, Penn Charter Aquatic Club’s Reece Whitley took down both the 100 (59.90) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:09.40) National Age Group records at the Tom Dolan Invitational. Despite aging up to the 13-14 category, Whitley managed to claim yet another NAG, again in the 100 breaststroke. Whitley’s 55.62 was short-lived, however, as Michael Andrew, who set the NAG at a 55.96 earlier this year, retook his record minutes after Whitley broke it. Andrew clocked a 55.43 at this weekend’s USA Winter Junior Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The second NAG fell to Pleasantville Aquatic’s Destin Lasco in the boy’s 11-12 100 yard backstroke. Lasco’s unofficial 54.03 broke Bolles School’s Ryan Murphy’s 54.20 record set in 2008. Lasco also notched up individual wins in the 400 IM (4:38.17) and 100 freestyle.

The boy’s 13-14 800 freestyle relay NAG was dipped under by both NOVA and NCAP’s A relay teams. City of Plano Swimmers (Seth Stubblefield, Cole Brewer, Zach Walters and Edward Hunt) set the record at a 7:05.66 in 2008. Though NOVA won the event in a 7:03.50, NCAP was also under the 2008 mark with its 7:04.62 second-place-worthy time. NOVA’s relay team consisted of David Dixon, Campbell Nystrom, Matthew Whelan and Jacob Johnson. NCAP, meanwhile, relied on fast splits from Timothy Wu, Andres Alarcon, Jason Tang and Will Cumberland.

Other standout swimmers this evening include NCAP’s Cassidy Bayer, who won the girl’s 13-14 100 fly in a 53.42, right off the 53.36 NAG set earlier this year by Elizabeth Nelson. Bayer also won the girl’s 13-14 400 IM in a 4:17.40.
