2023 SEC Championships, Day 4: Rhyan White Finishes 100 Back 4-Peat

Few swimmers in recent years have used college swimming as a launching pad quite in the way Rhyan White has. The Alabama senior has turned her success in the college pool into an Olympic berth, separating herself from the crowded American backstroke field and becoming a star.

She entered what could be her final SECs with two chances to enter rarefied territory, winning the same event four straight years.

On her first opportunity, she got the job done. White went 50.92 in the 100 back Friday night, controlling the field wire to wire to nab her fourth straight title. She’s the first woman ever to win the 100 back at four consecutive SEC Championships.

She has the chance to do the same in the 200 back on Saturday. And she added a medley relay gold for the Crimson Tide.

Recap of the evening session:

2023 SEC Championships Links

The women’s relay result leaves Florida holding a nearly 250-point lead entering the final day. Tennessee is second, barely holding off Kentucky.

On the men’s side, Florida’s lead is creeping up on 300 points over Auburn and Texas A&M, in search of the Gators’ 11th straight title. The battle for second is pitched, with three teams within 50 points.

Women’s 200 butterfly

Move over Maggie MacNeil, there’s a new LSU butterfly champ in town.

OK, maybe not. But Jenna Bridges added her name to the list of LSU champions by winning the 200 fly in 1:54.18. Her time is a school record that downed the mark set in 2016 by Kara Kopcso.

Bridges bested Callie Dickinson, the Georgia grad student who was the only holdover from the top three last year. Dickinson went 1:54.63. Sara Stolter finished third in 1:54.88.

Bridges’ win came in stellar fashion. She was fourth at the 150-yard wall (fifth if you count Izzy Gati, who was disqualified for a false start) before a finishing leg of 29.14 blew the field away. Only she and Olivia Theall of Texas A&M, who finished fourth, had a sub-30 final 50.

Men’s 200 butterfly

Clement Sacchi didn’t have the best morning swim, finishing just sixth. But the Missouri senior rectified that in the final, going out fast and hanging on to win in 1:41.07. He was the only swimmer out under 48 in 47.67, and the Frenchman had enough gas left in the tank to bring it home by three tenths over the prelims top seed, Joaquin Gonzalez Pinero.

Mason Wilby was third in the event. Fifth was Alabama’s Mateo Miceli, who went 1:42.02 to down the Crimson Tide’s longest-standing record, owned since 2003 by Stefan Ghergel.

Wilby had been third last year, the only one of the top four in the race back. Gonzalez Pinero won the B final last year.

Women’s 100 backstroke

Rhyan White was first at every wall Friday to get the win in 50.92. It’s not her fastest – she was 50.02 at SECs in 2020 – but it got the job done by a quarter-second over Josephine Fuller. The 2021 SEC Swimmer of the Year was fourth at NCAAs in this event last year. White separates herself from a crowd of women to have won the event three times each:Florida’s Kristen Linehan from 1989-91; Georgia’s Courtney Shealy 1998-2000; Florida’s Gemma Spofforth 2008-10; Georgia’s Olivia Smoliga 2015-17

Fuller followed in 51.26. Eboni McCarty of Georgia, who was 15th in this event last year, took third in 51.35. Meredith Rees of Missouri is fourth for the second straight year.

Men’s 100 backstroke

Speaking of people with a ton of medals … Adam Chaney added another one, the Florida junior going 44.18 out outdistance the field by nearly a second.

Chaney is the reigning champ, who was also second in 2021. In fact, seven of the finalists finished in the top 12 last year, the other being a freshman.

Nathan Stoffle finished second; he had been fourth last year. Matthew Menke of Alabama went form third to fifth. South Carolina’s Michael Laitarovsky finished third in 45.27, a best time to lower his school record.

Women’s 100 breaststroke

The top three in the 100 breaststroke is the same as it was last year, with Mona McSharry on top.

The Tennessee junior went 57.25 to win the 100 breast for the second straight year. It’s the 2021 SEC Female Freshman of the year’s 13th career medal at the conference championship, and she’s the first Tennessee woman ever to repeat as 100 breast champion. She set a meet record of 57.25, downing Breeja Nelson’s mark from 2014, and is within .07 of her conference record.

Second again was Zoie Hartman of Georgia, who went 58.65. (She’s now finished first or second in each of her 11 individual SEC swims.) Avery Wiseman of Alabama was third in 58.71. Florida got a boost form Florida State grad transfer Nina Kucheran, who finished fourth.

Men’s 100 breaststroke

Dillon Hillis didn’t swim the 100 breast last year after winning it in 2021. The fifth-year is back atop the podium with a time of 51.02, and the Gators will be back atop the team podium at meet’s end thanks to performances like the 1-2 with Hillis and Aleksas Savickas.

Savickas clocked in at 51.07 in a chaotic final. Reid Mikuta, who entered with the top time this season, was third in 51.22, the second straight year he’s finished in that spot. Missouri’s Ben Patton was fourth, which he’d also tied for last year, while 2022 champ Derek Maas of Alabama landed fifth.

Women’s platform

One night, two titles for LSU. This one was more conventional for the program’s recent trajectory, with Montserrat Gutierrez Lavenant outscoring the field with 293.50 points to win platform diving. Her teammate Maggie Buckley was third, with Kentucky’s Kyndal Knight in between.

Gutierrez Lavenant, who made all three diving finals last year, earned her first career medal, the first gold for an LSU female diver since 2016.

Women’s 400 medley relay

Alabama is not at full strength relay-wise due to injuries. But the Tide are still fighters.

Rhyan White, Avery Wiseman, Emily Jones and Kalia Antoniou did that to win the medley relay in 3:28.46. It’s an A cut time. Antoniou did the job on the anchor leg with a 47.08. White led off in 51.05, easily the fastest in the meet but slightly slower than the time she used to win the individual event. Runner-up Tennessee had gotten within .01 at the 300-yard exchange after a slow pickup by Antoniou, by the Cypriot sprint star made up for it quickly.

Tennessee (Josephine Fuller, Mona McSharry, Sara Stolter and Brooklyn Douthwright) were second in 3:28.78. McSharry’s 52.27 split was the standout.

Florida secured second in 3:29.98; both they and Georgia (3:31.01) posted A cut times. Further down, Maggie MacNeil split 48.76 – not just the only sub-49 or sub-50 time but the only sub-51 split – but the Tigers finished fifth.

Men’s 400 medley relay

Florida keeps graduating Olympians. And it keeps get better. How, it’s a little hard to figure.

But with two sophomores (really a junior in Chaney) and a freshman, Florida just nearly set an NCAA record, going 2:59.48 in the 400 medley relay.

The foursome of Adam Chaney, Dillon Hillis, Josh Liendo and Maguire McDuff broke an SEC record that had been the 3:01.00 that Florida set at NCAAs last year. Two of those swimmers are gone, and lo and behold, the ones that replaced them are better. It’s within .26 seconds of Texas’s NCAA record from 2017.

Tennessee was second, as Liendo’s 43.35 outsplit Jordan Crooks in fly. The Tennessee foursome of Harrison Lierz, Michael Houlie, Crooks and Gui Caribe went 3:02.51, a school record by more than a second. Auburn finished third, also with an A cut of 3:03.03. Missouri (3:03.14) and Texas A&M (3:05.94) are also NCAAs bound.
