SEC Championships, Night 1: Tennessee Men Set SEC Record; Maggie MacNeil Splits Best-Ever 22.52

Alabama’s stable of relay horses isn’t as full as the Crimson Tide would’ve hoped, thanks to injuries. But that didn’t stop the Tide from showing they’ve still got plenty left.

Alabama started the 2023 SEC Championships in College Station by defending their title in the women’s 200 medley relay, setting a pool record at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Not to be outdone, Tennessee’s men’s team set a conference record in the same event.

All the action from Night 1 of the meet.

Men’s 1-Meter Diving

The home boards were to the Aggies’ liking Tuesday night, leading to three of the top four spots and four of the top six to start the SEC Championships. Victor Povzner led the entire day, the junior earning a gold medal with a score of 375.50.

Teammate Rhett Hensley was the big winner of finals, having snuck in with the eighth-highest score of prelims before scoring 343.60 to nab third. Takuto Endoh was fourth and Allen Bottego was sixth. The 129 points that the divers gleaned is the most ever for the Aggies in a single SEC Championships event since joining the conference in 2012-13.

The only break in the Aggie domination was Bryden Hattie of Tennessee, who finished second.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay

All eyes were on Maggie MacNeil from the start, and not just for LSU’s sleek purple suits. The Olympic gold medalist went 22.52 in backstroke to clock the fastest split in NCAA history. That didn’t prevent the Tigers from finishing a distant eighth, though. (It is still a school record of 1:36.59, downing a record that had stood since 2009.)

Instead, it was Alabama that took the initiative. Olympian Rhyan White was only fourth at the first wall – Arkansas’ Andrea Sansores delivered a stellar 23.53 – but Avery Wiseman got them closer and Emily Jones split 22.88 to put them in the lead at the 150-yard mark. Kalia Antoniou brought it home in 21.05 to win in 1:34.20, a pool mark and solidifying an NCAA A cut they already held. It’s the third straight year they’ve won the race.

Florida finished second in a school-record 1:34.76. That’s an A cut, as are the times of Tennessee (1:35.53) in third and Auburn (1:36.02) in fourth. Arkansas finished fifth, just .08 off the A standard.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay

One fastest ever time deserve another: Jordan Crooks unleashed a savage fly split of 18.90 seconds to get Tennessee the win in 1:21.43. Bjoern Kammann, Michael Houlie and Gui Caribe rounded out the foursome.

That’s a pool record, and SEC Championships record and a conference record. The meet record was set in 2022 by Florida. The conference record goes all the way back to an Alabama mark of 1:21.89 from 2017.

Florida gave the Vols a run, their 1:21.73 also under both marks. They led until Crooks outsplit Eric Friese by a second. But Josh Liendo kept them in it on the anchor leg, going 18.20 to Caribe’s 18.43. Adam Chaney went out in 20.26.

Auburn finished third in 1:22.98. Reid Mikuta’s 22.87 was the fastest breaststroke split of the day. Georgia (school record 1:23.01), Texas A&< (1:23.24) and Missouri (1:23.28) followed, all in NCAA A cuts.

Women’s 3-Meter Diving

The reigning SEC Diver of the Year isn’t going to give up that title easily. Brooke Schultz laid down the early marker by outdistancing her teammate, Sophie Verzyl, to the title on 3-meter Tuesday.

Schultz led the way in prelims and paid if off with a score of 356.35. That was 6.5 points ahead of her teammate and the seventh career SEC title for the grad student. She did the springboard double a year ago and also as a freshman and sophomore at Arkansas.

Verzyl bumped up from fifth in prelims to second. That interrupted what looked like a battle between Schultz and LSU’s Chiara Pellacani. The Italian Olympian finished third, after being just six points back of Schultz in the morning. Kentucky’s Kyndal Knight was fourth.

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay

Micayla Cronk settled a back-and-forth relay in Florida’s favor, her split of 1:43.29 bringing home the Gators to the win in 6:57.11. It finally broke the stubborn resistance of Tennessee and kept a charging Georgia at bay.

Tennessee leapt to a lead with Brooklyn Douthwright delivering a sensational 1:42.45 off the front. But Florida reeled them in, with the Vols having a pair of 1:45s to bring it home.

Florida kept pace early with Ekaterina Nikonova and Talia Bates. Emma Weyant couldn’t make progress on Julia Burroughs on the third leg – her relay pickup was one of the slowest in the race – and handed off to Cronk in a .76-second hole. But Cronk reeled that in by the end of her first 100.

Florida, Tennessee and Georgia – led by Zoie Hartman’s 1:43.38 anchor leg to clock 6:58.90 – all notched A cuts.

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay

It took a bit, but Florida’s incessant stable of mid-distance eventually wore down the field, the foursome of Macguire McDuff, Julian Smith, Alfonso Mestre and Jake Mitchell setting a pool record of 6:08.64 to repeat as 800 free relay champs. It’s just off the SEC Championships record set last year by the Gators at 6:08.00.

Missouri led after 200 yards, with Jack Dahlgren going out in 1:31.17. The Tigers would faded to sixth but still nabbed the final NCAA A cut. Alabama’s Charlie Hawke also played the rabbit in 1:31.51. The Tide led at the halfway points, Kaique Alves adding on to Hawke’s performance. Hawke lowered his school record in the 200 free, and the foursome finished third in 6:12.46, the program’s first podium finish in the event since 1994 and two second quicker than the school record.

But no one can stack 1:30-lows like Florida. Both Mestre and Mitchell came in at 1:31s to put it away. The final margin was more than three seconds over Auburn, who clustered all three of their swimmers within 1.02 seconds to go 6:12.39. Alabama was third, followed by Georgia and Texas A&M.
