2023 SEC Championships, Night 3: Baylor Nelson Finishes IM Double

The Student Recreation Center Natatorium has had plenty to cheer from Baylor Nelson this week, the Texas A&M sophomore doing the IM double at the SEC Championships.

The second installment on Thursday night included a 1-2 finish for the Aggies, with teammate Anze Fers Erzen following.

Women’s 400 individual medley

For the third straight season, Lauren Poole found herself in the top three at SECs in the 400 IM.

For the second straight season, the 2021 champ was behind a newcomer.

Last year, it was Ellen Walshe. Thursday, Florida’s Emma Weyant swam away from her, booking an A cut in 4:01.18. It’s the Olympic silver medalist’s first season in Gainesville after swimming at the University of Virginia. Her time is an NCAA A cut.

That consigned the senior Poole to second, in 4:04.62. Texas A&M’s German international Giulia Goerigk was third in 4:06.84. Florida bolstered its team title case with Mabel Zavaros fourth and Kathleen Golding fifth.

Women’s 100 butterfly

Only Maggie MacNeil could go 48.99 in the 100 butterfly and look less than impressed by it.

MacNeil set the third-fastest time in history – behind what had been her NCAA record of 48.89 and the new mark set an hour earlier by Kate Douglass of Virginia at 48.84 – in winning in 28.99. That’s an SEC record, erasing the 49.38 that Erika Brown had set in 2020. It also takes down Brown’s pool mark from 2018. And it was two-plus seconds in front of the field, the entire field a body length behind her when she turned for home. MacNeil is the first LSU woman to win three golds at an SEC meet since 1993 (Lucy Findlay).

The best of the rest was Meghan Lee of Auburn, who turned in a time of 51.01. Rhyan White brought the outside smoke to go from eighth in prelims to third in 51.47. (Alabama’s American Olympian had been second last year.) Andrea Sansores finished third for Arkansas.

Men’s 100 butterfly

Make it a Canadian clean sweep of the fly, thanks to Josh Liendo. The Florida freshman nailed his finish to go 44.11, an NCAA A cut and the fourth-fastest time in the nation this season. It denied Jordan Crooks another title, the Tennessee sophomore finishing second in 44.37, also an A cut (he had been 44.04 in prelims).

Third was Frenchman Clement Sacchi of Missouri in 45.08. Crooks’s teammate, Bjoern Kamman, went 45.32 to finish fourth in a decidedly international final.

Women’s 200 freestyle

Tennessee’s Brooklyn Douthwright went out fast and dared the field to catch her.

They did not.

Douthwright clocked in at 1:42.64, an NCAA A cut that bettered the field by nearly three-quarters of a second. Second was Texas A&M’s Chloe Stepanek, in 1:43.77. That duo finished second and third, respectively, last season, and Stepanek was second as a freshman. Douthwright turned around from finishing 12th in the 100 fly an event earlier.

Then came the Floridians, solidifying the Gators’ hold on the team lead. Micayla Cronk finished third in 1:43.77, six tenths ahead of teammate Talia Bates. Ekaterina Nikonova was sixth, the Gators’ lead over Tennessee creeping up near 300 points.

Men’s 200 freestyle

Charlie Hawke keeps dropping time. This time, the Alabama sophomore went 1:31.20 to set the pool record, erasing a mark set at 2009 NCAAs by Shaune Fraser (1:31.70). He needed all of it to outkick Jack Dahlgren of Missouri, who turned into the last 50 ahead. But Hawke came back in 23.37 to Dahlgren’s 23.75 to edge him by .14 seconds.

Dahlgren’s time of 1:31.34 was also under the pool mark and also an NCAA A cut. Macguire McDuff closed in 23.15 to go from fifth at 150 to third, passing Kentucky’s Max Berg and fifth-place Brooks Curry (1:33.15).

Men’s 3-meter diving

It was going to take something special to deny the Texas A&M home-board advantage, and Bryden Hattie obliged. The Tennessee junior scored 429.20 points on 3-meter to take the crown. It denied a springboard sweep from the Aggies’ Victor Pozvner, who secured silver with a 412.65.

Takuto Endo gave Texas A&M a fourth men’s diving medal of the meet by scoring 400.35 for third.
