2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships: Brendan Burns Has 200 Back/200 Fly

If Friday was the day to move into the lead, Saturday is consolidation day for Indiana at the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships. The Hoosiers did the hard work in the morning to protect their lead, placing 11 swimmers in A finals in the final night session. That’s in addition to the 1,650 free, the platform diving finals and the 400 free relay.

The next closest team has only five A finalists, both Ohio State in second and sixth-place Northwestern.

A recap of the morning sessions:

100 freestyle

Hunter Armstrong started the morning in fine form, and Ohio State will need to extract every point out of its sprint contingent to stay in the top two. Armstrong set a pool record in 41.54. That’s just .02 off the meet record set in 2018 by Blake Pieroni.

Second is the Buckeyes’ Sem Andreis. Indiana will look to counter with Bruno Blaskovic third and Rafael Miroslaw fourth. That’ll be a fine tune-up for the 400 free relay.

200 breaststroke

All eyes are again on Max McHugh, who coasted in the morning to a 1:52.92, the top seed. He’s been 1:51.27 this season, so more is expected in the final.

Indiana grabbed the second and third seeds, with Josh Matheny and Maxwell Reich. Matheny and his 1:53.16 might be the only one to challenge McHugh.

Federico Burdisso is the second seed in 1:42.56, .01 up on Chachi Gustafson of Ohio State. Gal Groumi, Alex Quach and Tomer Frankel will also feature in a stacked final.
