The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship continued Friday with preliminaries on Day 3 of the meet.
The events scheduled are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
Cal has the lead heading into the day, but a late surge from Texas on Thursday night has the meet extremely close with every swim counting for both teams.

NCAA Championships: 100 Breast
Indiana’s Ian Finnerty is the only man under 50 seconds in the event, posting a 49.69 in 2018 … The next three on the all-time list are Florida’s Caeleb Dressel (50.03), Arizona’s Kevin Cordes (50.04) and Minnesota’s Max McHugh (50.19) set at the Big Ten Championships this season. … Stanford has won 13 titles in the event with Texas claiming seven and Cal claiming six. … Texas’ Brendan Hansen and SMU’s Steve Lundquist and Cordes each won four titles.
Minnesota junior Max McHugh broke the pool record to take the top seed in the 100-yard breaststroke heading into tonight’s final. McHugh touched the wall in 50.87 to claimthe top spot.
He was the lone swimmer under 51 seconds during the prelims session.
Virginia senior Keefer Barnum took the second seed in 51.09, finishing just ahead of Florida junior Dillon Hillis (51.27) and Cal junior Reece Whitley (51.38).
Indiana junior Zane Backes took the fifth seed for finals in 51.53, finishing just ahead of Louisville senior Evgenii Somov, who touched in 51.58.
Texas sophomore Caspar Corbeau took the seventh seed in 51.62, ahead of Pitt junior Cooper Van Der Laan, who touched in 51.73.
It should be an extremely competitive final with several swimmers capable of claiming the title. McHugh will be the favorite but will likely have to go faster than his prelim time to claim the title.
