2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 2 Prelims: Beata Nelson Breaks Pool Record in IM
The 2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships kicked off Day 2, the first full day of the conference meet.
The first prelims session opened Thursday morning at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center.

500 Freestyle
Michigan freshman Kaitlynn Sims took the top seed in the 500 freestyle with a 4:39.14. It was enough to hold off Ohio State’s Molly Kowal, who finished in 4:39.27. The final could be a pretty exciting one if these two keep up their even pace.
Indiana’s Cassy Jernberg took the third seed in 4:39.59, ahead of Ohio State’s Kathrin Demler (4:40.40) and Indiana’s Maria Heitman (4:40.91).
The sixth seed went to Michigan’s Sierra Schmidt (4:41.21), followed by Ohio State’s Veronica Tafuto (4:41.58) and Nebraska’s Autumn Haebig (4:43.13).

Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson topped the Iowa pool record in the 200 IM at the Big Ten Women’s Championships, earning a top seed in the event in 1:52.60, nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan took the second seed in 1:54.39, a couple of seconds behind Nelson, but also two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Indiana’s Mackenzie Looze took the third seed in 1:56.47, just ahead of Wisconsin’s Lillie Hosack (1:56.53), Ohio State’s Josephine Panitz (1:57.34), Michigan’s Victoria Kwan (1:57.58), Ohio State’s Hanna Gresser (1:57.72).
Ohio State’s Kristen Romano and Michigan’s Olivia Carter tied for the eighth seed at 1:57.79 and will have to compete in a swim-off.

Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil continued her quick pace to start the Big Ten Women’s Championships.
After clocking the fastest 200 medley relay split leadoff in history on Wednesday, she took the top seed in the 50 freestyle on Thursday, touching the wall in 21.51 to break the pool record and earn an NCAA automatic cut.
Ohio State’s Freya Rayner took the second seed in 21.89, just a hundredth of a second ahead of Indiana’s Cora Dupre.
Michigan’s Daria Pyshnenko (21.97) and Miranda Tucker (22.35) took the next two spots, while Ohio State’s Taylor Petrak took the sixth seed (22.37).
Rutgers freshman Elinah Phillip took the seventh seed (22.48) ahead of Penn State’s Madeleine Cook (22.51).
