2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 1: Maggie MacNeil Goes 21.30 in 50 Free
The 2020 Big Ten Women’s Championships kicked off Day 2, the first full day of the conference meet.
The first full finals session opened Thursday evening at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center.
Michigan had some big swims, but it was Ohio State that took the lead after Day 2 of the Big Ten Women’s Championships.

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 500 Freestyle
Ohio State senior Kathrin Demler surged ahead of the field to win the 500 freestyle in 4:37.04, barely holding off Indiana’s Cassy Jernberg (4:37.07), who finished just three hundredths of a second behind as both touched together.
Michigan’s Sierra Schmidt finished third in 4:37.15, just ahead of teammate Kaitlynn Sims (4:37.31), who was the top seed out of prelims.
Ohio State’s Molly Kowal finished fifth (4:39.35), followed by Indiana’s Maria Heitmann (4:40.24), Ohio State’s Veronica Tafuto (4:41.20) and Nebraska’s Autumn Haebig (4:41.83).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: 200 IM
Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson dropped a second from her prelims time to break the Big Ten Championships meet record in the 200 IM. She won the race in 1:51.66, besting the field by nearly two seconds.
Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan finished second in 1:53.15, also an NCAA “A” cut.
Indiana’s Mackenzie Looze was third (1:55.79), followed by Wisconsin’s Lillie Hosack (1:56.81), Ohio State’s Kristen Romano (1:57.29), Ohio State’s Josephine Panitz (1:57.32), OSU’s Hanna Gresser (1:57.57) and Michigan’s Victoria Kwan (1:57.99).

Big Ten Women’s Championships: Women’s 50 Free
Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil turned in another epic performance, winning the event in 21.30.
The previous NCAA park was 20.90 set earlier this season by Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil.
It was a huge event for the Wolverines as Daria Pyschnenko finished second in 21.82, while Miranda Tucker took seventh in 22.44.
Ohio State’s Freya Rayner was third in 21.85, followed by Indiana’s Cora Dupre (21.93), Ohio State’s Taylor Petrack (22.31) and Rutgers’ Elinah Phillip (22.41). Penn State’s Madeleine Cooke was eighth in 22.49.

Ohio State freshman Mackenzie Crawford won the 1-meter diving with 320.65 points.
Minnesota’s Joy Zhu was second with 306.75, followed by Purdue’s Emily Bretscher (303.25), Michigan’s Allie Klein (284.70).
Purdue’s Emily Meaney was fifth (284.20), followed by Michigan’s Nikki Canale (266.65), Ohio State’s Lexie Barker (242.15) and Illinois’ Taylor Shegos (239.25).

Michigan closed the session with a pool record, winning the 400 medley relay in 3:27.68.
Maggie MacNeil led off with a 50.04 split, followed by Miranda Tucker (58.64), Olivia Carter (51.10) and Daria Pyschnenko (47.90).
Wisconsin’s Beata Nelson led off with a 49.70 and teamed with Kelsi Artim, Lillie Hosack and Alana Palmer to take second in 3:29.08.
Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan, Hannah Brunzell, Miriam Guevara and Malorie Han took third in 3:29.48.
