2019 TYR Pro Swim Series Des Moines: Lazor, Flickinger, Li Post World Leading Times
The second night of finals from the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines featured ten events as Hali Flickinger, Li Bingjie, Annie Lazor and Kathleen Baker put up the top times in the world in their respective events.
Michael Andrew also had an impressive double in the 100 breast and 50 back.
The Des Moines crowd came out in good force on Thursday night as the state of Iowa rarely gets a chance to see some of the best swimmers in the world in action.
Women’s 100 Free
26-year-old Margo Geer had a strong 100 free final on Thursday night at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines with a 54.59. She was slightly quicker in Knoxville earlier this year when she swam a 54.09, which puts her fourth in the word rankings for 2019.
Geer finished ahead of 24-year-old Olivia Smoliga (55.05) and 25-year-old Natalie Hinds (55.26), both from Athens Bulldog Swim Club. Hinds is still early in her comeback as she came back in a big way at the Knoxville Pro Swim Series earlier this year going best times for the first time in three years.
Kendyl Stewart (55.36), Larissa Oliveira (55.37), Kayla Sanchez (55.39), Kelsi Dahlia (55.44) and Amanda Kendall (55.95) also swam in the final.

Men’s 100 Free
23-year-old Blake Pieroni, who recently signed with Mizuno, won the 100 free on Thursday night of the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines with a 48.91 to just out-touch Breno Correia (48.99) of Brazil. Pieroni was out in 23.78, putting him in sixth place at the turn, but he turned on the jets on the second 50 with a 25.13.
The early leader was Pedro Spajari from Brazil as he faded to seventh at 49.58 after leading at the 50 at 23.28. Spajari was one of three Brazilians in the final as Correia finished second and Marcelo Chierighini (49.19) finished in third. Chierighini tied Marius Kusch for third as Kusch will be looking to lead Queens to a Division II national title next week.
Jack Conger, swimming in his first Pro Swim Series for Cavalier Swimming, placed fifth at 49.48 in a tie with Ryan Held, who has since moved to Indiana’s pro group. Kenneth To (49.87) placed eighth.
Notably, Caeleb Dressel won the B-Final with a 48.71. His time was faster than Pieroni was to win the A-Final. Dressel did not wear a jammer this morning so he did not qualify for A-final.

Women’s 100 Breast
24-year-old Annie Lazor posted a world leading time in the 100 breaststroke as she swam a 1:06.66 on Thursday night in Des Moines at the TYR Pro Swim Series. Lazor improved on her best time of 1:06.89 from Knoxville earlier this year as she still holds on to the number one ranked time in the world this year.
“I feel like an age group swimmer again, after taking time off after the 2016 Olympic Trials,” Lazor said about her newfound energy.
“Every time I swim, I get a little better. Not just getting better but learning something new every time I swim. It’s great to have that fun element back again and not just be focused on going fast every time. I have a great training environment. I have awesome coaches and following their plan is paying great dividends so far.”
Lazor finished ahead of Bethany Galat (1:07.13) and Melanie Margalis (1:07.20) as they now sit second and fourth in the world rankings for 2019. Japan’s Reona Aoki (1:07.18) is in between those two.
Micah Sumrall, the top seed coming into the night, finished in fourth at 1:07.40 as she is now sixth in the world rankings.
Kierra Smith (1:08.49), Rachel Bernhardt (1:09.10), Jhennifer Conceicao (1:09.40) and Molly Renshaw (1:09.50) also swam in the A-Final.

Men’s 100 Breast
19-year-old Michael Andrew won the 100 breast on Thursday night at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines as he finished ahead of a very talented breaststroke field in Iowa. The men’s breaststroke fields are always tight in the United States as Andrew finished ahead of Great Britain’s James Wilby (59.91) and American Cody Miller (1:00.22).
Wilby was the second fastest man in the world in 2018 behind world record holder Adam Peaty as those two went 1-2 at European Championships last summer.
Miller is swimming in his first Pro Swim Series of the year as he is coming back from an injury that he has detailed in his vlogs.
33-year-old Felipe Lima (1:00.42) finished in fourth place as the Brazilian finished ahead of two Bulldogs Nic Fink (1:00.46) and Andrew Wilson (1:00.56).
Miguel de Lara Ojeda (1:01.18) and Nils Wich-Glasen (1:01.56) also competed in the A-Final.

DeLoof recently made the move from Club Wolverine in Michigan to Team Elite in San Diego.
Klaudia Nazieblo (28.87), Kayla Sanchez (29.07), Bridgette Alexander (29.07), Linnea Mack (29.10) and Kendyl Stewart (29.35) also swam in the A-Final.

Flickinger won the 200 fly in Iowa in Ledecky-esque fashion as she finished ahead of fellow Bulldog Megan Kingsley (2:10.91) and Britain’s Charlotte Atkinson (2:11.34).
Great Britain’s team had three total swimmers in the final tonight with Atkinson, Emily Large (2:11.64) and Keanna MacInnes (2:17.63) placing third, fourth and eighth.
15-year-old Katie Crom placed fifth at 2:14.05. Mary-Sophie Harvey (2:14.07) and Isabella Paez (2:15.58) also placed in the A-Final.

Women’s 400 Free
The Chinese duo of Li Bingjie (4:03.29) and Wang Jianjiahe (4:05.28) put up some great swims in the 400 free on Thursday night at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines. After becoming the sixth fastest performer in history last night in the 1500, Wang placed second behind country-woman Li here in the 400. Li and Wang are currently second and third in the world rankings for 2019 behind Katie Ledecky (4:02.71) from the Knoxville Pro Swim Series earlier this year.
Ledecky has skewed what a fast 400 free is recently, but Li put up a very impressive time here in Iowa. Those two finished well ahead of American Leah Smith (4:08.41) as she finished in third.
Bulldog veterans Melanie Margalis (4:10.50) and Hali Flickinger (4:11.38) finished in fourth and fifth as Flickinger got out of the 200 fly final not long ago.
Abbie Wood (4:12.38), Kaersten Meitz (4:13.03) and Kennedy Goss (4:14.94) also swam in the final.

Men’s 400 Free
26-year-old Zane Grothe won the 400 free on Thursday night in Des Moines at the TYR Pro Swim Series as he swam a 3:49.29. He was in a tight race with Anton Ipsen as he finished in second at 3:49.83.
Grothe and Ipsen moved to second and third in the world rankings behind Italian Gabriele Detti (3:47.60). Grothe is the new face of distance swimming in the United States as he will represent Team USA at Worlds this summer in the 400, 800 and 1500.
23-year-old Mitch D’Arrigo (3:53.46) was with the leaders through 300 but fell off over the final 100 as the Gator Swim Club product finished in third. He was just ahead of Reed Malone (3:53.83), who has resurfaced recently after seemingly retiring after the 2017 NCAAs. Malone was last on the USA national team in 2015 when he swam third leg on the 4×200 free relay at World Championships.
Jordan Wilimovsky (3:55.37), Jay Litherland (3:55.72), Jeremy Bagshaw (3:55.72) and Luiz Melo (4:03.07) also swam in the A-Final.
