2019 Speedo Sectionals Santa Clarita Day 1: Brea Aquatics Start Strong

The 2019 Speedo Sectionals at Santa Clarita, California kicked off this Thursday. The meet is taking place at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center from July 18 to July 21. Today’s events included the 100 free, women’s 1500 free, 200 breast, men’s 800 free and 200 fly.

Brea Aquatics started off with the right foot as Kenisha Liu went home with two victories: the 100 free and 200 breast. In addition, fellow teammate Michael Tenney won the 200 fly. Overall several Brea swimmers raced in the A finals finishing top three.

Women’s 100 free

Kenisha Liu from Brea Aquatics won the event by over two seconds with a 55.65. Quicksilver Swimming’s Ella Mazurek got silver in a 57.74, while Jamie Brennan from Beach Cities Swimming finished third with a 57.75.

Gaucho Aquatics’s Emily Ward came in fourth (57.82), followed by Marly Lough also from Brea Aquatics (57.92). Catherine Sanchez from La Mirada Armada finished sixth (57.93). Crow Country Club’s Bailey Hartman placed seventh (57.95) and 13-year-old Teia Salvino from Paseo Aquatics placed eight (58.24).

Men’s 100 free

Felix Chiun from De Anza Cupertino Aquatics went home with the gold in a 51.10. Joseph Lastelic from Gaucho Aquatics (51.26), and unattached swimmer Ryan Brimer (51.46) followed in second and third place.

Gavin Wight from Diablo Aquatics placed fourth with a 51.62, swimming unattached Spencer Daily came in fifth (51.98) and Zachary McIntyre from Marin Pirates finished sixth (52.23). Michael Babaian from Brea Aquatics (52.33) and Ccat Swimming’s Zac Van Zandt (52.46) came in seventh and eight respectively.

Women’s 1500 free

With over a 15-second lead, Kathleen Sulkevich from La Mirada Armada went home with the title in 17:20.17. Gaucho Aquatics’s Emily Boggess got the silver (17:35.88) and Alice Ciobanu from Tiger Aquatics finished third (17:40.21).

Katie Kucik from Boulder City Henderson Swim Team came in fourth with almost an 18 seconds drop with a 17:45.77. La Mirada Armada’s Rosalee Mira Santa Ana (17:46.13) and unattached swimmer Ellie Whitney (17:47.31) finished their race in fifth and sixth place. Nicole Stiles from Crow Canyon Country Club (17:49.60) and Sarah Cushman from La Mirada Armada (17:51.20) also swam in the fastest heat.

Women’s 200 breast

For her second win of the night, Brea Aquatics’s Kenisha Liu finished first with a 2:31.88, dropping six seonds from this morning. Gabrielle Wei from Irvine Novaquatics came in second (2:35.13) and Crow Canyon Country Club’s Ana Jih-Schiff got the bronze with a 2:36.72.

Swimming unattached Amelia Feick placed fourth (2:37.98), followed by Gaucho Aquatics’s Brittney Straw (2:38.36) and Jacqueline Basham from Brea Aquatics (2:38.48). The seventh and eight place belonged to Crow Canyon Country Club’s Shelby Suppiger (2:38.72) and Sophia Sebastian from Quicksilver Swimming (2:41.77).

Men’s 200 breast

Unattached swimmer Matthew McDermott clocked in first with a 2:19.83. Tri Valley Aquatics’s Cole Reznick finished second with a 2:20.31 and unattached  Anthony Moore (2:21.09).

Daniel Marella swimming unattached came in fourth (2:21.25), followed by Boulder City Henderson Swim Team’s Joseph Purdy (2:21.53) and Benjamin Hayes from California Aquatics (2:21.75). Alto Swim Club’s Edward Tay (2:23.79) and Marcello Quarante (2:24.30) from Gaucho Aquatics finished sixth and seventh respectively.

Men’s 800 free

Orinda Aquatics’s Michael Wheeler took the gold home with a 8:23.05. Mason Carlton from Quicksilver Swimming came in second in 8:24.12 and La Mirada Armada’s William Schodorf finished third with 8:29.39.

The fourth place belonged to Kennan Hotchkiss from West (8:29.42), followed by Boulder City Henderson Swim Team’s Mason Romantic (8:30.54). Michael Luna finished sixth after dropping almost 15 seconds (8:34.80). Thomas Jansen from Walnut Creek Aquabears (8:39.53) and Roadrunner Aquatic’s Noah Hultner (8:39.53) took seventh and eighth respectively.

Women’s 200 fly

La Mirada Armada’s Catherine Sanchez won the event in a 2:13.59. Zephanie Koh from Brea Aquatics went home with the silver (2:16.15) and Rosalee Mira Santa Ana from La Mirada Armada came in third (2:16.67). Also from Brea Aquatics, Emily Trieu finished fourth (2:18.40), followed by La Mirada Armada’s Maelynn Lawrence (2:18.69).

Riverside Aquatics’s Liberty Williams came in sixth (2:18.81), followed by fellow teammate Samantha Nickell (2:19.58). Alexis Depaco from Crow Canyon Country Club (2:19.73) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 200 fly

Another Brea Aquatics victory came in from Michael Tenney, who was the only swimmer below two minutes by clocking 1:59.69. After a close race, Alto Swim Club’s Jonathan Affeld placed second with a 2:02.82, followed by Vincent Cheng from Brea Aquatics who finished third in 2:02.82.

Brian Wang from Quicksilver Swimming came in fourth (2:04.37). La Mirada Armada’s Zachary Serrano got fifth (2:05.35) followed by Ian Carsten from Bay Side Aquatics  (2:10.25) and San Clemente Aquatics’s Quinn Birtles (2:10.25).

 

Action continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. PST with the 200 free, 100 back, 400 IM and 400 freestyle relay.
