2019 Speedo Junior Nationals: Wanezek, Grum Post Top Times

The second full morning of the 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals from Palo Alto, California featured six events with the 200 back, 100 free and 400 IM.

Women’s 200 Back

Olympic Trials cut: 2:14.69

Maggie Wanezek got under the Olympic Trials standard with a 2:13.96 to lead the 200 back qualifiers on Wednesday morning at the 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals in Palo Alto. Wanezek is ahead of Kennedy Noble, who was highlighted as an age grouper of the month by Swimming World last year. Cora Dupre is seeded thirda t 2:14.58 while Katie Rauch also dipped under the Olympic Trials cut at 2:14.67. Wanezek was also a featured age grouper of the month in September 2018.

Paige McCormick (2:14.86), Felicia Pasadyn (2:14.88) and Sophia Tuinman (2:15.03) also advanced to the final. Defending champion Alexandra Crisera, who will swim this fall at Stanford, placed seventh this morning in her future home pool at 2:14.94.

Men’s 200 Back

Olympic Trials cut: 2:02.99

Jake Marcum dropped three seconds off his seed time with a 2:00.78 to lead the 200 back qualifiers on Wednesday morning at the 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals in Palo Alto, California. Marcum is almost two full seconds ahead of Aaron Sequeira (2:02.59), who came into the meet as a 2:05 swimmer. Sequeira got under the Olympic Trials cut, as did Ian Grum (2:02.66), who was the top seed coming into the meet. Grum’s seed time was under 2:00.

Elliott Jones (2:03.32), Colby Mefford (2:03.43), Christopher O’Connor (2:03.48), Hunter Armstrong (2:03.60) and Nathan Hayes (2:03.76) also qualified for the final.

Women’s 100 Free

Olympic Trials cut: 56.29

Amelia Liu posted the only sub-56 100 free on Wednesday morning at the 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals in Palo Alto with a 55.92 to lead Mandy Brenner (56.11) and Miranda Heckman (56.14). Liu will be a freshman at Princeton this fall while Heckman will be headed to Texas.

Dynamo’s Tristen Ulett is seeded fourth at 56.27 as she just got under the Trials cut. She has committed to the University of Louisville.

Chole Stepanek (56.49), Quinn Schaedler (56.55), Riley Francis (56.57) and Ella Bathurst (56.66) also qualified for the A-Final.

Men’s 100 Free

Olympic Trials cut: 50.49

Luke Maurer came into the meet with a 51.40 but dropped a second and a half to go a 50.04 and garner the top seed in the 100 free heats. Maurer is ahead of Hunter Armstrong (50.39) Swim MAC’s Jack Walker (50.67) and Tim Connery (50.72).

Matthew Jensen, the younger brother of Cal swimmer Michael Jensen, posted a 50.74 to move up to fifth. All eight swimmers were separated by eight tenths of a second of each other.

Olympic Trials cut: 4:51.79

Samantha Tadder leads the qualifiers in the 400 IM with a 4:48.52 as she got under the Olympic Trials cut. Colby Hurt (4:48.70), Zoe Dixon (4:49.80), Hannah Ownbey (4:51.03) and Kate McCarville (4:51.64) also got under the cut and qualified for the final.

Olympic Trials cut: 4:25.99

Ian Grum posted another A-final appearance with a Trials cut in the 400 IM at 4:25.52. Grum is ahead of David Johnston (4:25.56) as they were the only two under the cut this morning. Grum will be headed to the University of Georgia this fall.
