2018 World Cup Eindhoven Day 1 Finals: Morozov, Jianjiahe Set Records

The World Cup moved to the Netherlands this week for the third stop in this season’s tour.

Some of the world’s top swimmers like Sarah Sjostrom, Katinka Hosszu, Vladimir Morozov, Michael Andrew, Ranomi Komowidjojo, Chad le Clos and Blake Pieroni have competed at each stop.

Eindhoven has a few new faces like U.S. Olympians Kathleen Baker and Leah Smith.

Here is what happened in the finals:

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Australia’s Mitchell Larkin trailed Japan’s Irie Ryosuke for nearly the entire 200 backstroke race.

But a 27.28 split in the final 50 surged Larkin to victory in 1:49.75.

Ryosuke finished second in 1:50.15 after leading through the 150 mark.

Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki finished third in 1:52.42, followed by Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich (1:52.45).

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Katinka Hosszu made it 2 for 2, winning the 200 butterfly in 2:02.87.

China’s Zhang Yufei finished second in 2:03.09, ahead of Kelsi Dahlia of the U.S. (2:03.31) and Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos (2:06.59).

Men’s 100 Butterfly

In a packed field, Chad le Clos again came out on top, winning the 100 butterfly in 49.56. The South African led the entire race.

Brazil’s Nicholas Santos was second in 50.22, followed by France’s Mehdy Metella (50.31).

Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh finished fourth in 51.37, ahead of Finland’s Riku Poytakivi (51.51), South Africa’s Ryan Coetzee (51.52), Japan’s Yakima Yuya (51.72), and Michael Andrew of the U.S. (52.34).

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Russia earned a 1-2 finish in the women’s 200 breaststroke.

Yulia Efimova started strong and led the entire way, winning the event in 2:15.62.

Compatriot Vitalina Simonov was second in 2:19.65.

Spain’s Jessica Vall finished third in 2:20.06, followed by Melanie Margalis (2:20.20), who finished one hundredth ahead of China’s Yu Jingyao.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Russia earned another 1-2 finish on the opening day in Eindhoven, this time in a men’s event.

Kirill Prigoda won the 100 breaststroke in 56.88 to finish ahead of compatriot Anton Chupkov (57.01).

Brazil’s Felipe Lima finished third in 57.14, followed by Japan’s Hayato Watanabe (57.55).

Women’s 50 Freestyle

The women’s portion of the first day in Eindhoven ended with a stacked 50 freestyle.

Two of the top swimmers in the world went head-to-head in a classic battle.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands held off Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom by four tenths of a second.

Kromowidjojo won in 23.26, followed by Sjostrom (23.67).

Femke Heemskerk of the Netherlands finished third (23.77), followed by Russia’s Mariia Kameneva (24.07), Kim Busch of the Netherlands (24.09), Brazil’s Etiene Medeiros (24.24), Kelsi Dahlia (24.4) of the U.S. and Valerie van Roon (24.58).

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Vladimir Morozov also made it 2 for 2 with another victory to close out the session.

He won the 50 freestyle in 20.69, dominating the event to win by more than a second.

South Africa’s Bradley Tandy finished second in 21.19, ahead of Blake Pieroni of the U.S. (21.34).

Jesse Puts of the Netherlands finished fourth (21.35), followed by Japan’s Kosuke Matsui (21.43), Michael Andrew of the U.S. (21.53), Russia’s Vladislav Grinev (21.61) and Kyle Stolk of the Netherlands (21.72).
