2018 European Championships Day 5 Prelims: Peaty Sets Record; Sjostrom-Blume Set Up Showdown
Day 5 of the European Championships kicks off with Tuesday’s preliminary session in Glasgow, Scotland.
Many of the world’s best swimmers look to battle for supremacy and clinch spots in semi-finals later in the day.

It looks as though another showdown between Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom and Denmark’s Pernille Blume is on the docket Tuesday.
The two top sprinters took the top two seeds in the 100 free on Tuesday. Blume took the top seed at 52.97. Sjostrom was second at 53.45.
France’s Charlotte Bonnett took the third seed at 53.90), followed by Femke Heemskerk of the Netherlands (53.96), Denmark’s Signe Bro (54.08), Britain’s Freya Anderson (54.27), Russia’s Mariia Kameneva (54.46) and Italy’s Federica Pellegrini (54.51).
Anika Apostalon, swimming for Czech Republic, took the 10th seed at 54.61.

Men’s 50 Breast
Adam Peaty set up an exciting final by surging to a meet record in the 50 breast. The British champion finished in 26.50, breaking his own mark of 26.62 set in 2014.
Italy’s Fabio Scozzoli was second in 27.04, followed by Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus (27.09).
Serbia’s Caba Siladji was fourth (27.12), followed by Ties Elzerman of the Netherlands (27.16).

Women’s 200 IM
Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu surged to the top seed in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:11.09.
Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor took the second set at 2:11.39, followed by Switzerland’s Maria Ugolkova (2:12.43).
Britain’s Aimee Willmott was fourth at 2:12.64, followed by Italy’s Ilaria Cusinato (2:12.98) and Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos (2:13.44).

Men’s 200 Back
Russia completed another 1-2-3 sweep, this time in the 200 backstroke, leaving another title contender out of the competition.
Only two swimmers from each country qualify for the semi-finals.
Evgeny Rylov took the top seed at 1:56.67, followed by Grigory Tarasevich (1:57.07). Clement Kolesnikov was the odd one out, finishing third at 1:57.31.
Germany’s Christian Diener was fourth (1:57.89), followed by Britain’s Brodie Williams (1:58.62), and Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki (1:58.70).

Women’s 4×200 Free Relay
Russia cruised to the top seed in the women’s 4×800 free relay to close the women’s session.
Anna Egorova, Valeriia Salamatina, Irina Krivonogova and Arina Openysheva took the top seed in 7:57.90, the only team to break eight minutes.
Great Britain’s Kathryn Greenslade, Eleanor Faulkner, Lucy Hope and Holly Hibbott took the second set at 8:00.78.
Germany’s Reva Foos, Marie Pietruschka, Isabel Mari Gose and Annika Bruhn took third at 8:01.95.

Men’s 800 Free
Mykhaylo Romanchuk of the Ukraine held off the rest of the field to take the top seed in the 800 free, finishing in 7:49.96.
Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri took the second seed (7:50) to lead the rest of the swimmers to make the final.
Croatia’s Marin Mogic took the third seed (7:51.78), followed by Czech Republic’s Jan Micka (7:52.14), France’s Damien Joly (7:52.54), Italy’s Domenico Acerenza (7:52.80), Germany’s Florian Wellbrock (7:53.62) and Norway’s Henrik Christiansen (7:53.94).
Austria’s Felix Aubock took 12th (7:55.56) and missed the final.
