2018 Canada Pan Pac Trials Day 4 Finals: Kylie Masse, Markus Thormeyer Win Again

The Canadian Swimming Trials continued Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta.

Top swimmers in the country are vying for spots on the Pan Pac national team, many in multiple events.

Kylie Masse is one of those multi-event members of the Pan Pac team after she won big in the 200 backstroke. Markus Thormeyer and Mackenzie Padington also earned victories on Day 4.

Men’s 100 Fly Multi-Class

Maxime Rousselle took the top spot in the men’s 100 fly multi-class event. He finished in 1:02.82.

Alexander Elliot was second in 59.59.

Multi-class events are not scored on time alone. The different classes of paralympics are factored into the race.

Women’s 200 Back

Kylie Masse got off to an extremely fast start in the 200 back, taking a 29.90 split to take an early lead of more than a second.

She cruised in to victory in 2:08.94, more than a second ahead of Kennedy Goss (2:10.14), who finished second. It was a full three seconds slower than Masse’s best time in the world this year, set at the Commonwealth Games.

Aela Janvier took third in 2:11.82, followed by Mackenzie Glover (2:12.78).

Men’s 200 Back

Markus Thormeyer continued to dominate this week. The 20-year-old cruised to victory in 1:59.13, nearly two seconds ahead of Sebastien Somerset (2:01.86).

The time was not in the top 25 in the world this year.

Josh Zakala was third in 2:01.87, followed by Cole Pratt (2:01.96).

Women’s 50 Free

In an entertaining duel involving two veterans, Sarah Fournier had enough in the tank to edge Aria Mainville in the 50 freestyle.

Fournier finished in 25.82, while Mainville was just behind in 25.89.

Kyle Leibel, a 16-year-old, was third in 25.91, followed by Charis Huddle (26.03) and Alexia Zevnik (26.05).

Yuri Kisil dropped four tenths from his prelims time to win the 50 free by nearly a half second.

Kisil finished in 22.06, followed by Alex Loginov (22.49). Will Pisani was third 22.51 and Spencer Bougie was fourth in 22.70.

It was a race that featured all teenagers in the top eight. Mackenzie Padington had enough in the tank to hold off the field in the women’s 1500 free, finishing in 16:25.38 — six seconds ahead of her seed time.

Kate Sanderson was second in 16:30.83, followed by Emma O’Croinin (16:40.59).
