The first trailer for the documentary “In Deep with Ryan Lochte” has been released by Peacock ahead of the launch of the new streaming service from NBCUniversal on July 15.

The film charts the fall and reinvention of Lochte. Having let himself and team down on the last night of swimming at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games when he partied, got drunk and got himself and younger teammates embroiled in disciplinary action resulting from bad behaviour, Lochte paid the price with the loss of reputation and sponsors.

Lochte got up, shook himself down, accepted responsibility, met the woman of his dreams, married and is now a father of two on the Olympic comeback trail as a 35-year-old looking to make what would be a fifth Games at Tokyo 2020 shunted to 2012 due to Covid-19.

NBC says of its Ryan Lochte documentary: “At the 2016 Rio Olympics Ryan Lochte (Celebrity Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars) was at the center of a scandal that has since overshadowed a decorated swimming career that includes 12 Olympic medals. Now a 35-year-old husband and father of two young children, Lochte is hoping for one more chance to make Team USA and prove he’s not the same man he was four years ago.

The Ryan Lochte documentary is produced by Peacock and NBC Sports Films. The Peacock app will be available on Android and Android TV devices, Apple devices, Chromecast and Chromecast built-in devices, Vizio SmartCast and LG smart TVs, as well as Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex services.

The trailer features sound and footage from the Rio incident, including the voice of NBC commentator and 1984 Olympic champion Rowdy Gaines talking viewers through the bad news. The documentary notes the driving force for Lochte: to prove to his family that there’s much more to him than a bad, drunken night in Rio. Says Lochte, addressing his wife and children:

“I went from making millions to zero. This is the most pressure I’ve ever had in my life. If I don’t make the Olympic team, they won’t see the change that I’ve made.”
