Ziegler Clocks 4:36.30 in 500 Free at Tom Dolan Invitational

FAIRFAX, Virginia, December 11. ONCE again, Janet Evans’ American record in the 500-yard freestyle withstood a major challenge by Kate Ziegler. Competing at the Tom Dolan Invitational on Saturday night, Ziegler clocked 4:36.30 for the 500 free, falling a little short of Evans’ 1990 standard of 4:34.39.

Still, Ziegler’s swim was sensational, as she posted a 17-plus second victory in the 20-lap race. Second place went to teammate Chloe Sutton, who covered the distance in 4:50.64. Ziegler split 53.25 at the 100-yard mark and went through the 200 point in 1:48.87, three hundredths faster than what Evans split during her record performance.

Ziegler won the 1,650 free on the opening night of the competition and bested the field in the 200 free on Friday night with a swim of 1:46.51. The 17-year-old, representing The Fish, is the reigning world champion in the 800 and 1,500-meter freestyle events.
