Yale Men’s Press Release

The Yale men’s swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 in the Ivy League with a 215-85 victory over Cornell on Wednesday.

The resurgent Cornell squad had recently defeated Penn and won the Ithaca College Invite, but the Bulldogs handed the Big Red its worst loss of the season. Yale swimmers and divers won every event at the meet.

The meet began on Tuesday evening with the two diving events. Junior James McNelis won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving with scores of 299.47 and 314.70, respectively, finishing just ahead of Cornell senior Tommy Hallowell in both events.

The swimming competition started on Wednesday morning with the 200-yard medley relay. Yale’s A team—featuring freshman Shawn Nee, senior captain Andrew Heymann, senior Alwin Firmansyah and junior Victor Zhang— won with a time of 1:31.39.

Firmansyah won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:48.11, well ahead of his competitors. Sophomore Alex Schulz finished second with a time of 1:52.72.

Cornell nearly won its first event in the 50-yard freestyle, but sophomore Aaron Greenberg was able to eke out a victory with a 21.03 finish, .14 ahead of Cornell senior Tim Satterthwaite.

After a break, Greenberg tried for another victory in the 100-yard freestyle. But this time his teammate Zhang came out on top, winning the event in 46.09.

Harder turned the tables on Nee in the 200-yard backstroke; he won the event with a time of 1:49.56, while Nee clocked in at 1:50.02.

Heymann swam a close race against Rutter in the 200-yard breaststroke. Heymann finished the first 100 nearly a second before Rutter, but Rutter gained on him the second half of the race. Heymann held on to win his third event of the day, finishing in 2:03.11 to Rutter’s 2:03.28.

Hyogo won the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM, making him the only swimmer at the meet to win three individual events. Between Hyogo’s races, Firmansyah won his third event, the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 49.50.

Yale closed out the meet with another relay victory. Zhang, Greenberg, Harder and Hogan won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:03.64.

Tim Wise, the Robert J. H. Kiphuth Director of Men’s Swimming and Diving, said that the meet was “a great team win.”

“Sweeping all 16 events was an impressive performance. I was also very happy that the seniors closed out their four-year dual meet career undefeated against The Big Red,” Wise said

The Yale swimming class of 2015 is the first to defeat Cornell in four consecutive dual meets since the class of 2004.

“Those wins are a testament to the tremendous job our senior class has done for our program,” Wise added.

The Bulldogs’ next meet will be against two more Ivy League opponents: Dartmouth and Penn. That meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Jan. 10 in Hanover, N.H.
