Women’s Water Polo: ASU Beats Villanova, Loses to Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ., Feb. 15. AFTER four losses in a row, the Arizona State women's water polo team got back into the win column with an 8-5 victory over the
Villanova Wildcats Saturday in the Sun Devils first of four games in the Princeton Invitational.

Katie Davis (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) led the offense with three goals to her credit as the Sun Devils halted their program-record-tying four-game winless streak.

ASU and VU ended the first period knotted at one goal apiece and ended the half with the Sun Devils holding a 3-2 advantage. The third period, however, was when ASU took control of the game and went on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 8-2 following the third period.

The Sun Devils limited the Wildcats to one full-strength goal while allowing three scored on man-advantage plays and the fifth on a four-meter penalty shot. Lizzie Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) made four saves and Kristie Meyer (Fr., Reno, Nev.) stopped three shots in the victory.

Offensively, Lauren Jacobson (So., League City, Texas), Bryn Kuech (So., Bonsall, Calif.), Ashley Orzalli (Jr., Acampo, Calif.), Elaine Bentley (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and Tessa Wyborny (Fr., Walnut
Creek, Calif.) each added a solo goal for the Sun Devils. Adriane Mota (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) assisted on two goals while Wyborny, Bentley, Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), Orzalli and Kuech added one assist each in the game.

The ASU women's wataer polo team was hampered by a
slow start and a five-goal deficit as it lost at the Princeton Invitational to host No. 15 Princeton, 11-4, in the Sun Devils' second game of the day. Four separate Sun Devil players scored in the loss as ASU dropped to 4-6 on the year.

After falling behind 5-0 following the first period, the Sun Devils were unable to climb back into the game. Katie Davis (Jr., Riverside, Calif.), Bryn Kuech (So., Bonsall, Calif.), Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu,
Hawaii) and Elaine Bentley (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) each found the back of the cage for the Sun Devils while Kuech, Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel) and Heather Remfer (Fr., Lodi, Calif.) assisted on the goals for ASU.

Lizzie Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) recorded eight saves in the contest, but it was not enough as the defense allowed a season-high 11 goals. The previous high was 10, recorded twice this year, both last weekend at the UC San Diego tournament.

The Sun Devils will return to the pool for their third and fourth games of the Princeton Invitational Sunday. ASU will play Bucknell at 9:30 a..m. EST before concluding the event with No. 19 Harvard at 1:30 p.m. EST.
