Women’s NCAAs, Day One: Georgia Sets Word Best in Winning the 200m Free Relay

By Phillip Whitten

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 18. WE’RE back at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on the campus of Texas A&M University for the finals of the first day of competition at the Women’s NCAA Championships.

The evening promises to be exciting, with several national, NCAA and world records in jeopardy.

Unlike this morning, we’ll post each event as a separate story. Here we go….

Event #1. 200 meter freestyle relay

In the consols, Arizona led all the way to win in 1:40.31 – a time that would have placed them third in this morning’s prelims. Stanford was second and Texas A&M third.

Coughlin’s 24.58) to Andrea Georoff’s final touch at 1:37.27 – a world best time (FINA doesn’t recognize world records in the 4×50 meter relays). The previous world best was 1:37.52 by The Netherlands.

Splits:
Kara Lynn Joyce 24.24
Neka Mabry 24.45
Paige Kearns 24.34
Andrea Georoff 24.24

Auburn – sparked by Eileen Coparropa’s 23 74 second anchor leg — was second in 1:38.08 – the second-fastest swim in NCAA history.
