Women’s NCAAs, Day 2 Prelims: Sandeno, Mason Qualify One-Two in 400 IM

By Phillip Whitten

400 meter individual medley
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. There are six heats in the 400 IM, with USC’s Kaitlin Sandeno the top seed and Tracy Caulkins’ 23 year-old US Open mark of 4:33.44 in her sights.

Heat 1: Georgia’s Haley Chura, the very last qualifier in this event, wins heat one from lane 8 in 4:46.14.

Heat 2. Notre Dame freshman Katie Carroll takes the second heat in 4:42.74, edging Kate Tiedeman of Cal.

Heat 3. Erin Gorlesky, a senior at Indiana, overtakes Stanford sophomore Laura Davis with 55 meters to go and pulls away to win in 4:42.05, the fastest time thus far. Davis touches in 4:43.30.

Heat 4. Big 10 champion Bethany Pendleton, a Wisconsin senior, takes the race out hard and shrugs off challenges in the backstroke and breaststroke to win going away. Pendleton swims a strong 4:38.28, with Indiana sophomore Kristen Bradley touching in 4:42.54.

Heat 5. Auburn’s Kirsty Coventry, the SEC champion, goes out hard in the fly with Florida’s Sara McLarty just staying in contact. McLarty and Auburn’s Lauren Duerk move to within a body length on the breaststroke. McLarty closes the gap further in the free, but it’s Coventry in 4:37.33, McLarty following in 4:38.07.

Heat 6. The final heat features two of last night’s winners: Kaitlin Sandeno (200 IM) and Emily Mason (400 free), the top two seeds in this event. They take the race out first and at the end of the fly are .06 seconds apart. Sandeno begins to separate herself in the backstroke, forging a half body-length lead at the halfway mark. In the breaststroke, Sandeno stretches her lead to almost a body-length. Both girls are fine freestylers and
Mason can only make up a few hundredths. At the wall it’s Sandeno in 4:34.74, Mason in 4:35.85.

Sadeno and Mason qualify one-two, but Auburn qualifies three swimmers for the A final.

It takes 4:40.13 to make A final, 4:43.52 to make B.
