Women’s NCAA Div. I Champs, Day 2 Finals: Bruce Takes 100 Breast, Holds Off Talented Field

By Dan Mihalik

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 18. CAROLINE Bruce of Stanford was seeded in third place after the morning prelims of the 100 breaststroke. But her time of 59.55 was not only a pool record, not only the third fastest performance of all time in the event, but her time was also good enough to earn her the victory.

"My coach told me before the race just to go out there and have fun," Bruce said. "Whenever I have fun, winning seems to follow."

The Georgia duo of Lindsey Ertter and Sarah Poewe, finished second and third, respecitvely.

Vipa Bernhardt, the SEC Champion in the event, finished in fourth place for Florida, beating Texas’ Elizabeth Tinnon to the wall by only .03 seconds.

Erin Briskie of Texas A&M earned sixth place beating out Agnes Kovacs of Arizona State and Laura Graham of Kentucky, who finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
