Wisconsin’s Top Recruit Conner McHugh Chooses Minnesota

STURGEON BAY, Wisconsin, September 30. THE top-ranked recruit in the state of Wisconsin decided to remain home in Big Ten country as Dour County YMCA’s Conner McHugh committed to Minnesota this evening.

McHugh, who is ranked 43rd in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, was a much sought after breaststroke specialist.

While McHugh shopped his services throughout the nation, including at some Southeastern Conference schools, it just made sense for him to remain closer to home, and Minnesota is the benefactor of his top-end breaststroke speed.

McHugh has a 54.03 100-yard breast to his credit, having clocked that type of speed at the 2013 YMCA Short Course National Championships in April. He backed that up at YMCA Long Course Nationals with a sterling 1:03.1 in the 100-meter breaststroke.

McHugh also has some serious ability in the longer distance breaststroke, having clocked 1:59.00 in the 200-yard breast and a 2:20.49 in the 200-meter breaststroke at the YMCA short course and long course events this year.

As far as his third NCAA event, McHugh has definitely demonstrated some ability in the 200 IM with a 1:50.58 at the YMCA Short Course Championships. He also can turn in a bit of sprinter speed with a 21.77 in the 50-yard free as well as a 26.87 in the 50-yard breaststroke.

McHugh is the first top-50 recruit nabbed by the Golden Gophers, who are battling Michigan and Indiana for Big Ten supremacy.
