NEW COMMIT: The University of Wisconsin has gained a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2019 from quickly-improving distance freestyler Jack Leuthold of Billings, Montana.

Leuthold does his club swimming with Billings Aquatic Club and is a two-time Winter Juniors qualifier with the U.S. Open cut in the mile. He finished fourth in the mile in a new lifetime best at Juniors West last month. He capped off an extremely successful summer season with 100% best times, a bronze medal in the 800m free, and a pair of sixth-place showings in the 400m/1500m frees at Santa Clara Futures. He recorded six top-3 finishes at the Montana LCM Championships in July and placed fourth in the 1000 free and fifth in the mile at Federal Way Speedo Sectionals last March.

Also swimming for Billings Central High School, Leuthold is a six-time Montana State Championship finalist. He won the 500 free and was the 200 free runner-up as a junior after placing first in the 500 free and third in the 50 free during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“So excited to continue both my academic and athletic careers at the University of Wisconsin! Both the swim program and academics are outstanding and I can’t wait to be a part of it! Go Badgers!”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:42.81
  • 500 free – 4:30.88
  • 1000 free – 9:17.11
  • 1650 free – 15:13.94

When he suits up for the Badgers as a member of the class of 2023, Leuthold will join a distance training group led by Robert NiemannJoseph Milinovich and Matthew Hillmer. Leuthold has made significant improvements over the past two seasons, dropping 13 seconds from the 500 free, 1.5 minutes from the 1000, and well over two minutes off his mile.
