NEW COMMIT: The University of Wisconsin – Madison has earned an in-state verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from high school junior Jacob Carlson of Waukesha, Wis.

Carlson does his club swimming with Waukesha Express Swim Team and is a four-time Winter Juniors qualifier with the U.S. Open standard in the 100m back. He placed 18th in the 100 back and 22nd in the 50 free at Juniors West last month. He capped off his summer season with a gold, silver and bronze at the Wisconsin LCM State Championships where he achieved four new lifetime bests. Carlson had four final appearances at NCSAs last spring and won a trio of events at the Wisconsin SCY State Championships in March.

Also representing Waukesha South High School, Carlson is a four-time Wisconsin State Championship finalist. He finished third in both the 50 free and 100 back as a sophomore after placing sixth and fourth, respectively, in those events during his freshman season. He has also earned NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors.

He told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to continue my swimming career as a Badger. I felt right at home with the team and amazing coaching staff. Madison is a great school with a lot to offer, I am looking forward to being a part of something great!”

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.60
  • 100 free – 45.35
  • 100 back – 49.57
  • 100 fly – 49.81

Although he’s not quite in scoring range at the Big Ten Championships just yet, Carlson has made significant improvements each season with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go. When he suits up for the Badgers as a member of the class of 2024, he’ll add his talents to a sprint group that will lose their top returners to graduation and will join a backstroke squad led by Matt Novinski.
