Wisconsin Badgers Collect 2021 Verbal Commitments from Matthew Segal, Ben Wiegand

NEW COMMITS: The University of Wisconsin, Madison has recently received two new verbal commitments for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Matthew Segal of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Sun Prairie, Wisc. native Ben Wiegand.

Both swimmers will suit up for the Badgers along with Nico Butera as members of the class of 2025.

MATTHEW SEGAL

A talented breaststroker, Segal does his club swimming with Club Wolverine and owns a pair of U.S. Open standards. He most recently placed seventh in both the 100 breast and 200 breast at Juniors East in December after earning a best time at Junior Nationals in August. A current junior at Pioneer High School, the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American is a four-time Michigan D1 State Championship finalist. Segal earned bronze in the 200 free and took fourth in the 100 breast as a sophomore while placing 16th in the 100 free and 14th in the 200 IM as a freshman.

His best times include:

  • 100 breast – 54.53
  • 200 breast – 1:59.81
  • 200 IM – 1:50.97

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic careers at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The coaches, team, and culture of Wisconsin was everything I had hoped to find. I am excited to join such an amazing program. I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for all the help and encouragement along the way. Can’t wait to be a part of this incredible team!!! Go Badgers!!!”

Wiegand, who owns two U.S. Open cuts in the 50m free and 100m breast, swims year-round with Sun Prairie Storm. He raced both of his top events at the Toyota U.S. Open last month and took ninth and fifth, respectively, in those races at Des Moines Futures in August. Also competing for Sun Prairie High School, Wiegand finished fourth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 50 free at the Wisconsin DI State Championships during his sophomore season.

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.91
  • 100 free – 46.64
  • 100 breast – 57.57
  • 200 breast – 2:07.14

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am beyond thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Wisconsin. This amazing opportunity is a result of the ongoing support I have received from my family, teammates, teachers, and coaches. I can’t wait to be a Badger! #OnWisconsin”
