NEW COMMIT: Madison, Wisc. native Wes Jekel will stay close to home next fall after verbally committing to continue his swimming and academic career at the University of Wisconsin.

Jekel swims year-round with Badger Aquatic Club and owns a trio of Junior National cuts. He capped off his summer season with a win in the 100m fly at the Wisconsin LCM Championships after recording a pair of best times at Iowa City Sectionals. He had six top-5 finishes at the Wisconsin SCY Championships in March which included a gold medal in the 100 back.

Also swimming for Madison West High School, Jekel is a six-time Wisconsin Division I State Championship finalist. He won the 100 back and was the 200 IM runner-up during his junior season after placing second and fifth, respectively, in those events during his sophomore campaign. Jekel has also earned NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts.

He told Swimming World:

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin! I grew up in Madison, so im excited to become a Badger!”

His best times include:

  • 100 back – 49.05
  • 100 fly – 49.49
  • 100 breast – 56.66
  • 50 free – 21.55
  • 100 free – 45.76

When he suits up for the Badgers as a member of the class of 2023, Jekel will join a young but talented training group that includes Matt NovinskiJian Mao and Eli Fouts. Although he sits just outside of scoring range at the Big Ten Championships, he will add valuable depth in a wide range of events for Wisconsin.
