Winfield Posts Breaststroke Sweep During World Cup Action in Brazil

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, February 12. LAST week, Tara Kirk and Megan Jendrick put on a breaststroke show during the New York stop on the FINA World Cup circuit. This weekend, it was Staciana Winfield’s time to shine. Racing at the Belo Horizonte (Brazil) stop, Winfield posted a sweep of the breast events.

A day after winning the 100 distance, Winfield added the 50 and 200 crowns in the meet in South America. The 2000 Olympian, then as Staciana Stitts, she took the 50 breast in 31.17 and came back later in the evening to win the 200 breast in convincing fashion. Winfield touched the wall in 2:26.96, well ahead of the 2:28.72 of Diana Duarte Gomes (Portugal).

The men’s 200 free produced the most scintillating finish of the competition as Canada’s Brent Hayden narrowly edged South Africa’s Ryk Neethling at the wall. Hayden was timed in 1:44.85, slightly quicker than the 1:44.91 of Neethling, who finished the World Cup tour as the top scorer among the men. Neethling will compete next month at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

For the second straight day, Germany had a strong showing, led by Nicole Hetzer’s victory in the 400 individual medley (4:41.59), a complement to her earlier triumph in the 200 I.M. Meanwhile, Janine Pietsch was the winner of the women’s 100 backstroke (1:00.14) and Thomas Rupprath prevailed in the men’s back (24.17) and took second in the 100 fly, which was won by Brazil’s Kaio de Almeida (51.75).

Other victories were collected by Brazil’s Henrique Barbosa in the men’s 100 breast (59.82) and Thiago Pereira in the 200 I.M. (1:56.67). Romania’s Camelia Potec took first in the 400 free (4:07.52) and countryman Dragos Coman bested the field in the 1,500 freestyle (15:13.40). Russia’s Arkady Vyatchanin was the victor in the 200 back with a swim of 1:53.08.
