Wildcats Get Lucky, Earn Verbal from North Carolina 3A State Champion Matthew Lucky
NEW COMMIT: Northwestern University has landed a big verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season and beyond from U.S. Open qualifier Matthew Lucky of Harrisburg, N.C.
He will join Tona Zinn of Santa Ana, Calif. as a member of the Wildcats’ Class of 2026.
Regarding his commitment, he said:
“B1G things are coming! I am excited to finally announce my commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Northwestern University. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for helping me along the journey. #gocats ??”
Primarily a breaststroker, Lucky does his club swimming with Sailfish Aquatics and most recently earned six best times at the Speedo Summer East Championships where his highest finish was a 17th-place showing in the 200m breast. He also earned bronze in both the 100 and 200 breast at Cary Sectionals after winning the 200 breast at the 18&U Winter Championships.
His best times include:
- 100 breast – 54.57
- 200 breast – 1:57.73
- 200 IM – 1:48.95
- 100 fly – 48.80
- 200 fly – 1:49.44
Also competing for Concord High School, Lucky is a five-time individual North Carolina 3A State Championship finalist. He won the 100 breast and was the runner-up in the 200 IM as a junior while taking first in the former event during his sophomore season.
He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts in the pool and in the classroom.
