NEW COMMIT: North Carolina native Jared Carter has verbally committed to West Virginia University and will arrive in Morgantown in the fall of 2020.

A talented freestyler who gets faster as the distance gets longer, Carter swims year-round with the YMCA of the Triangle Area Swim Team and owns a pair of Winter Juniors standards. He capped off a stellar summer season with a gold medal in the 800m free and a silver medal in the 1500m free at both TYR Summer Seniors and Greensboro Sectionals. Last winter, he raced the mile at Juniors East and registered three top-25 finishes at YMCA SCY Nationals.

Also competing for Green Hope High School, Carter is a four-time North Carolina 4A State Championship finalist. He finished seventh in the 500 free and tenth in the 200 free as a junior after placing 15th in the former event during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I chose West Virginia University due to its inclusive & engaging team culture, beautiful campus and location, new facilities, and knowledgeable coaching staff that will help me mature as a student, swimmer, and person.”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:42.26
  • 500 free – 4:33.51
  • 1000 free – 9:28.24
  • 1650 free – 15:40.09

Carter will be a huge asset to the Mountaineer’s lineup as his best times already rank at the top of their lineup, and he’ll have one year of overlap with returning distance swimmer Tom Hubbard. He’ll also join Joe Schaefer on campus at the start of the 2020-21 season.

If you have a commitment to share, please send a photo and quote via email to hs@swimmingworld.com.
