MORGANTOWN, West Virginia, February 27. AT the WV High School State Championships, the Nitro girls took first with 146 points. George Washington (136.5) and Bridgeport (116) placed second and third respectively. Only 7.5 points separated the first and third-place finishers on the boys’ side. George Washing captured the title with 159.5 points, followed closely by Bridgeport (157) and Parkersburg (152).

Girls Results

George Washington won two of three relays. The group of Anna Davis, Shae Bradley, Sarah Argento, and Meredith Davis clocked a 1:57.50 for a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay.

Senior Kathryn Saurborn (East Fairmont) won the 50 (24.61) and 100 (53.49) freestyles.

Emily Ross, Emiy Cooperrider, Ashton Clemens, and Lindsey Kerns of Nitro took first place in the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.78).

Kelsey Ferguson (Weir) had individual wins in the 200 IM (2:14.52) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.89).

Heather Gacek and Allison Pitchford teamed up with Argento and M. Davis in the 400 freestyle relay for a first-place finishing time of 3:53.76.

Boys Results

Tyler Foster, John Weber, Tim Phillips, and Brooks Martin (Parkersburg) set a state record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.65. The 2001 record (1:43.01) was held by Fairmont’s Kripcak, Waitkus, Parker, and Fujioka. Phillips also won the 200 freestyle (1:39.14).

Junior Tim Squires had individual wins in the 50 (20.74) and 100 freestyles. He set a state record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.03.

Bridgeport’s Jacob Merinar, Matthew Csonka, Jeremy Wilson, and Zach Higginbotham took first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.54).

David Byler joined Martin, Weber, and Phillips to close the meet with state record in the 400 freestyle relay (3:19.02).
