Walker Wins Glenn S. Hummer Award for Long-Distance Contributions

CARBONDALE, Illinois, September 21. RICK Walker, the coach at Southern Illinois University, was honored last week at the USA Swimming House of Delegates meeting. Walker was presented the Glenn S. Hummer Award which annually recognizes an individual or group for contributions to long-distance swimming. The award was established in 1978.

Walker was honored for his work with the United States open-water squad at July’s World Championships in Montreal. Walker’s leadership helped the U.S. finish fourth in the team standings, just one point out of a top-three finish. Thanks to the likes of Chip Peterson, a world champion in Montreal in the 10K race, the U.S. has improved its stature on the open-water scene.

"This is the second time that I have received the award and this time it is in recognition for the work and efforts we did leading up to the world championships," said Walker. "This was one of the biggest honors because it was a whole group of people working toward a common place, a common direction and that is always a lot of fun."
