Virginia Sweeps 500 Free, Take Overall Lead At ACC Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virg, February 26. DAY two of the 2004 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship belonged to the Virginia Cavaliers, who captured three titles and eight top three finishes, to take the championship lead with 314 total points. Four swimmers achieved NCAA automatic qualifying times Thursday evening, three in the 500-yard freestyle and one in the 50-yard freestyle events.

The evening began with the Virginia Cavaliers sweeping the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle competition. Sophomore Fran Crippen successfully defended his title winning the race with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:17.90. His time in the 500 freestyle is the fastest recorded in the ACC this season. Two-time ACC champion Ian Prichard touched the wall in second with an NCAA "A" cut time of 4:18.79, followed by teammate John Millen who finished third with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:19.09. This is the eighth straight win for Virginia at the ACC Championship in this event.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Virginia's Bo Greenwood won his third consecutive title making him just the fourth swimmer in ACC Championship history to win the 200 individual medley in three straight seasons. The junior from Manakin, Va. hit the wall in first in a season best time of 1:48.10 (NCAA "B"). The Cavaliers' Ryan Berg (1:49.24) edged out Clemson's Mark Henly (1:49.27) by three one-hundredths of a second to finish in second place.

NC State's Cullen Jones established a personal best time in the finals of the 50-yard freestyle en route to winning his first ACC individual championship. The sophomore sprinter finished the race with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 19.70. Maryland's Mark Hill swam his fastest time of the season at 20.11 (NCAA "B") to finish in second. UVa's Adam Kerpelman rounded out the top three with a third place finish at 20.32.

Eric Shulick of Clemson captured the one-meter diving competition accumulating a score of 314.60 to become just the sixth Tiger in ACC history to win the event and first since Brian Haecker won the event back in 1996. Virginia's Pete Amstutz finished in second at 310.85, while Eric Poitras of North Carolina placed third with a score of 308.30.

The Virginia Cavaliers ended the second day of competition in style winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of senior Adam Kerpelman, senior Jon Haag, freshman Greg Imboden and sophomore Ethan McCoy finished in a time of 1:19.94 (NCAA "B") to win the event.

The Championship will resume tomorrow, Friday, February 27 with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. and finals commencing at 7:00 p.m.
