NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia, the two-time defending NCAA champion, has officially begun its Class of 2028 with a big verbal commitment from Junior National champion Katie Christopherson of Atlanta, Georgia.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“Guess HOOS headed to Charlottesville!?!? I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Virginia – I can’t wait to join such an incredible team and continue my academic career at UVA! I am very thankful for everyone who has helped me through this process, and a big thank you goes to my coaches, Caleb and Will, for helping me grow as an athlete, as well as to my parents, for all their support over the years. Thank you also, Coach Todd, and the UVA coaching staff for this opportunity! WAHOOWA!!!”

Christopherson does her club swimming with SwimAtlanta and is coming off a breakout long course season. She was the 200m breast champion at Junior Nationals where she also placed third in the 100m breast, 10th in the 200m IM, 15th in the 50m free and 17th in the 100m fly.

In April, she raced to 10th in the 200m IM, 12th in the 50m breast and 18th in the 100m breast at the Phillips 66 International Team Trials. She also won five events at Georgia Seniors in December 2021.

Her best times include:

  • 200 IM – 1:56.72
  • 100 breast – 1:00.81
  • 200 breast – 2:13.02
  • 50 free – 23.54
  • 100 free – 49.98
  • 100 fly – 57.92

Currently a junior at Westminster Prep School, Christopherson won the 100 breast and 200 IM at the 2022 Georgia 1-3A State Championships. She placed first and second, respectively, in those events during her freshman season.

Her winning time in the 200 IM of 1:56.72 broke the high school state record that was held by two-time U.S. Olympian Kathleen Hersey for more than a decade.
