NEW COMMIT: A day after the Cavaliers’ men’s basketball team clinched their first-ever NCAA Championships, the University of Virginia scored a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from Greensboro, N.C. native Tanner Hering.

Primarily a distance freestyler, Hering does his club swimming with Swim GSA and owns seven Winter Junior cuts. He recently won the 500 free and was the 200 free/400 IM runner-up at Greensboro Speedo Sectionals in March after recording four lifetime bests at Juniors East in December. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American recorded 100% best times at NCSAs this past summer where his highest finish was a 15th-place showing in the 200m free. A current junior at Page High School, Hering is a seven-time North Carolina SCY Senior Championship finalist over the past three seasons.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Virginia! I can’t wait to further my education and swimming career at such a prestigious university. Thank you to my family, coaches, and teammates for helping me along the way! #WAHOOWA #LevelUp”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:37.80
  • 500 free – 4:25.39
  • 1000 free – 9:20.53
  • 1650 free – 15:43.36
  • 200 fly – 1:51.94
  • 400 IM – 3:53.41

Hering has made significant improvements over the past two seasons, shaving off seven seconds in the 200 free, 16 in the 500 free, 17 in the 400 IM and 37 in the 1000. When he arrives in Charlottesville as a member of the class of 2024, he will add his talents to a training group that’ll include Robby GillerSamuel Schilling and Matthew Otto.
