Virginia Adds U.S. National Teamer Alex Siegel to Class of 2032
NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia has received yet another impressive verbal commitment for its growing Class of 2032, this time from Alex Siegel of Merrick, New York. Siegel is one of the best distance swimmers in the country and is on the U.S. National Team for open water.
She will join Karina Plaza, Allison Kelly and Shelby Hutchinson in Charlottesville in Fall 2028.
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University Of Virginia! I would like to thank my family, coaches and friends for helping me get to this point. A huge thanks to Coach Todd, Coach Gary and the rest of the coaching staff at UVA. I can’t wait to see what the future holds, GO HOOS”
Siegel trains year-round with Long Island Aquatic Club. She most recently competed at Junior Nationals where she won the 400m free and placed fourth in the 800m free. That was after she took 12th in the 800m free, 14th in the 1500m free and 17th in the 400m free at Nationals.
Siegel earned bronze in the 800m free at the U.S. Open in December where she also finished fourth in the 1500m free and sixth in the 400m free. She secured gold in the mile and bronze in the 1000 free at NCSA Spring Championships in March. She was the runner-up in both the 400m free and 800m free at Junior Nationals in 2025.

- 1000 free –9:45.43
- 500 free –4:47.07
- 200 free –1:49.29
- 400 IM –4:18.58
At the 2026 USA Swimming Open Water Nationals, Siegel placed fifth in the 10k to secure a spot on the 2026-27 U.S. National Team for open water.
Siegel’s best time in the mile is already fast enough to have garnered an invite to last year’s NCAA Championships, and she would’ve placed seventh at the ACC Championships.
The Cavaliers won their seventh straight Atlantic Coast Conference title and their sixth consecutive NCAA Championship crown in 2026.
