NEW COMMIT: Virginia Tech has secured a new verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season from in-state standout and Junior National qualifier Isabel Marstellar of Newport News, Va.

She will arrive in Blacksburg as a member of the Hokies’ Class of 2026 along with Carmen Weiler.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech. I am so grateful for my family, friends and coaches who have helped me along the way. I can’t wait to be a Hokie!!”

Marstellar, who does her club swimming with Coast Guard Blue Dolphins under Jack Bierie, most recently competed at Virginia Seniors in March where her highest finish was a fifth-place showing in the 200 back. In summer 2019, she recorded six best times at Virginia LCM Seniors before going on to finish 14th in the 200m fly at Geneva Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 100 fly – 56.41
  • 200 fly – 2:01.94
  • 200 IM – 2:05.07
  • 100 back – 57.43
  • 200 back – 2:00.51
  • 100 free – 52.63
  • 200 free – 1:52.11

Currently a junior at Menchville High School, Marstellar is already a four-time Virginia State Championship finalist. She won the 200 IM and placed fourth in the 100 back as a sophomore at the 4A meet while taking eighth in the 200 free and ninth in the 100 free at the 5A meet during her freshman season.

Anchoring in 23.73, she also earned gold in 2020 as a member of Menchville’s winning 4×50 freestyle relay.

Marstellar’s versatility will be beneficial for the Hokies and she could find herself in a number of different events during her college career. She has made steady improvements over the last year-and-a-half, dropping four seconds in the 100 back, eight seconds in the 200 back, and four seconds in the 200 IM.

Under head coach Sergio Lopez, Virginia Tech finished eighth in the team standings at the 2020 ACC Championships and just welcomed an extremely talented first-year class to campus.
