Video: Ryan Hoffer’s Finals Races, Post-Meet Interview at Arizona High School State

MESA, Arizona, November 11. FRESHMEN don’t usually win Swimmer of the Meet awards at high school championships (or college meets, for that matter), but Ryan Hoffer’s swims last weekend at the Arizona Division 1 championships were undeniably the top performances of the day.

Hoffer’s 19.55 in the prelims of the 50 free on Friday was his first time under 20 seconds, and also a USA Swimming national age group record. He returned on Saturday to post a 19.66 to easily win the final.

50 freestyle final:

Hoffer, a freshman at Chaparral High School, returned about 20 minutes later to place second in the 100 butterfly with a 48.18 and led off his team’s 400 free relay with a 44.25 to end the meet.

400 freestyle relay final:

And let’s not forget about the spectacular 20.96 butterfly leg to help Chaparral set the state record in the 200 medley relay:

After a long day of racing, Hoffer talked about his performances, and whether he’ll try that grueling 50 free-100 fly double again.
