Video of Joseph Schooling’s National High School Record in 100 Fly

STUART, Florida, November 9. THANKS to Bolles head coach Sergio Lopez, we now have footage available of Joseph Schooling’s amazing national high school record in the 100-yard fly at the Florida 1A Championships.

Original Swimming World report of the record
After blasting out a 45.90 in the prelims of the Florida state 1A high school swimming championships to nearly take back his overall national high school record, Bolles’ Joe Schooling posted a 45.52 in tonight’s finals to reclaim the title of fastest high school butterflyer in history.

Schooling, however, might not get much sleep tonight, wondering how Caeleb Dressel will respond in tomorrow’s 2A meet. Dressel stole the record from Schooling in September with a 45.89. Though Schooling and Dressel train together for the USA Swimming Bolles School Sharks team, Dressel attends Clay High School and competes in a different division.

In any case, Schooling is the reigning record holder today. He dropped almost a full second off his best time in a year, a remarkable feat since the 46.50 he swam this time last year was the national high school record.

Schooling is likely making the Texas Longhorns grin from ear to ear today while they compete in a dual meet in Virginia today. Schooling’s set to move to Austin next summer, and his time today has NCAA top-eight potential already. It would have been third at last spring’s NCAA championships.

Bolles had a monopoly on the awards stand in the boys’ 100 fly, as Javier Barrena took a very distant second in 49.64 and William McKinney was third with a 49.88. Joey Carbone, also of Bolles, was fourth with a 50.46.

Since Schooling represents Singapore internationally, he wouldn’t be eligible for USA Swimming’s national age group records. That’s just as well, since Tom Shields holds the 17-18 record with a 44.91, swum at the NCAA championships.

Schooling got a good warmup for his 100 fly tonight with a blazing 20.16 butterfly split in the 200 medley relay, helping Bolles win with a time of 1:28.93. That is not too far off the 1:28.02 swum by Bolles last year to set the national high school record.
