NEW COMMIT: The University of Vermont has received their first verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from Hazel Wilkins, who will make her way to Burlington from Merrick, N.Y.

A talented butterflyer and IMer, Wilkins swims year-round with Long Island Express and most recently placed eighth in the 100 fly at the Suffolk County Championships in April. Last winter, she raced four events at Ithaca Speedo Sectionals after finaling in both fly events at the MIT Invitational.

Also competing for Bellmore-Merrick Central High School, Wilkins is a three-time qualifier in the 100 fly at the New York Federation Championships. She finished 17th in her signature event during her junior season after racing to 19th during her sophomore season and 11th in her rookie campaign.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of Vermont! Thanks to all of my friends, family, and coaches for their endless support. GO CATS!!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 fly – 57.07
  • 200 fly – 2:06.69
  • 200 IM – 2:10.61
  • 400 IM – 4:35.36

Wilkins is a big get for UVM and will make a major impact when she suits up for the Catamounts as a member of the class of 2024. Even with a year of club swimming still to go, her times would rank near the top of their lineup and she’ll have one year of overlap with Laura Pringle and Katie Rivers. She would’ve scored in the A-final of both fly events as well as the B-final of the 400 IM at the 2019 America East Championships where Vermont finished third overall in the team standings.
