Utah’s women’s swimming team set two Gibb Pool relay records and got another pool mark via Emma Broome in the 100 backstroke in a 140-118 Pac-12 win over Washington State Friday night.
Broome and Washington State sprinter Chloe Larson each set individual pool marks in a very quick meet.
Utah bookended the triumph with relay records. The 200 medley squad of Broome, Sadie Edwards, Emma Lawless and Maddie Woznick clocked in at 1:41.20. Woznick led off the 400 free relay with Kayla Miller, Lawless and Audrey Reimer, tallying a 3:24.33 that downed the mark set by UCLA in 2014.
Broome pulled away in the final 50 from her teammate Reimer to win the 100 back in 54.37 seconds. That undercuts the 54.51 set by Wazzu’s Emily Cook in 2018.
Lawless won the 100 butterfly for Utah. Sara McClendon led a 1-2 in the 1,000 free, Reimer won the 200 back and Charity Pittard took home top honors in the 100 breast for the Utes.
“Just so proud of the girls and the way they competed tonight” Utah head coach Joe Dykstra said in a team statement. “We came up here and raced with a shorthanded roster, traveled all day right before the meet, but still managed to put up a few best times and broke three WSU pool records. I couldn’t be prouder of the resiliency of this group.”
Washington State’s Larson won the 50 and 100 free. The time in the former, 22.70 seconds, set a Gibb Pool record, downing the mark set by Stanford and Canadian Olympian Taylor Ruck in 2018 at 23.04 seconds.
Larson went 50.21 in the 100 free, just off the pool mark of 49.92 set in 2016 by USC’s Anika Apostalon.
Michee Van Rooyen won the 200 and 500 free for Washington State. Kiana Swain (200 butterfly), Mackenzie Duarte (200 breaststroke) and Taylor McCoy (200 individual medley) added wins for the Cougars.
