Utah 5A High School State Championships

PROVO, Utah, February 19. BRIGHTON walked away with two state titles at the Utah 5A High School State Championships. On the girls' side, Brighton tallied 366 points for first followed by Alta (249) and Lone Peak (243). The Brighton boys took first with 349 points, while American Fork placed second (218) and Bingham finished third (191.50).

Girls Results
Kaitlyn Overstreet, Abby Alger, Amanda Barrett, and Yasmin Farahani (Brighton) teamed up for a win in the 200 medley relay (1:50.18).
Barrett had individual wins in the 200 (1:52.85) and 500 (5:05.80) freestyles.

Skyline's Angela Bennion, Maria Amirkhanashvili, Natalie Bennion, and Sydni Johanson won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.12. A. Bennion also won the 100 freestyle in 53.73.

Senior Kimberly Welch (Lone Peak) had individual wins in the 100 butterfly (55.93) and the 100 backstroke (57.89).

A. Bennion, Amirkhanashvili, N. Bennion, and Johanson had a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.76).

Boys Results
Brighton won two of three relays. Robby Miner, Greg Ballif, Long Gutierrez, and Tanner Wiest won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.01. Ballif also won the 100 breaststroke in 59.63.

Freshman Long Gutierrez was a dual event winner in the 50 freestyle (21.46) and the 100 butterfly. He set a state record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.33. The previous record (49.37) was set in 1994 by Matt Chamberlain (Olympus).

Miner was a dual event winner in the 200 and 500 freestyles. He surpassed the meet record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.13. The previous record (1:42.41) was set last year by Skyline's Josh R. Tanner. Furthermore, he erased a 33-year-old record from the books in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:33.00. The previous record (4:34.08) was set in 1977 by Rick Morley (Cyprus).

Howie Barker, David Amirkhanashvili, Ian Smith, and Douglas Pizac clocked a first-place finishing time of 1:28.55 in the 200 freestyle relay.
American Fork's McKay King set meet records in the 200 IM (1:54.66) and the 100 backstroke. His 100 backstroke time of 50.46 surpassed the 1999 record (50.53) set by Skyline's James Bekker.

Miner, Kyle Spicer, Isaac Marshall, and Gutierrez closed the meet win a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:13.21).
