USA Women Edge Italy, 11-9, Qualify for Championship Game

COSENZA, Italy, July 27. TEAM USA defeated Italy, 11-9, in the second day of competition at the FINA World League Super Final in Cosenza, Italy on Thursday. Lauren Wenger and Betsey Armstrong combined to form a powerful duo as Wenger scored three goals and Armstrong pulled down 11 saves for the U.S. With the score tied 4-4 at half, the U.S. pushed ahead with two goals in the third and never looked back.

With the win, the U.S. qualified for the championship game of the Super Final and the 2007 World Championship in Melbourne, Australia. In other games, Canada beat the Netherlands, 8-7, and Australia defeated Russia, 14-12.

“I thought we played a good overall game,” Team USA head coach Guy Baker said. “The team continues to improve. We are happy to qualify for the final and to qualify for the 2007 World Championships.”

The United States holds the overall advantage with 12 points, while Italy is second with seven points just ahead of Russia’s third-place six points.
