USA Swimming Sectionals, Iowa City: Pair of Distance Pool Records Fall
IOWA CITY, Iowa, July 24. THE USA Swimming Sectionals held in Iowa City came to an end with a pair of long course meter pool records being broken in the distance freestyle events.
Wisconsin's Danielle Beckwith lowered the pool record in the women's 1500 free with a 17:10.90. That swim beat the 18:03.48 set by Bailey Pons in May of this year. Patriot's Morgan Dickson (17:15.23) and Pons (17:26.72) finished second and third in the event. Francis Bott took down the men's 1500 free pool record with a 16:22.08. Joe Szczupakiewicz held the previous record with a 16:40.53 also from May. New Trier's Reed Malone (16:22.28) and Wisconsin's Marcus Guttmann (16:29.11) rounded out the top three.
Badger's Aja Van Hout topped the women's 200 IM in 2:20.69, while Aquajets' Abigail Duncan took a close second in 2:20.86. Wisconsin's Ashley Wanland snared third in 2:21.35. Wisconsin's Daniel Lester touched first in the men's 200 IM with a 2:05.02. Peoria Area's Matt Elliott (2:05.02) and Wisconsin's Michael Weiss (2:07.64) completed the podium.
Wisconsin's Rebecca Thompson snared the women's 50 free title in 25.91. NASA Wildcat's Taylor Reynolds took second in 26.17, while Aquajets' Rachel Bootsma checked in with a third-place 26.33. Club Hawkeye's Ryan Phelan (23.09), Duncan Partridge (23.10) and Paul Gordon (23.18) swept the men's 50 free podium.
