USA Swimming Names Open Water National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, June 17. USA Swimming has selected the 2006-07 Open Water National Teams that will compete at the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships, 2006 Open Water World Championships and 2007 World Championships. These international competitions will be the first opportunity for U.S. Open Water National Teams to compete with an Olympic Games as the focus. The 10K open water races were added in October 2005 to the 2008 Olympic program in Beijing.

Also historic is the appointment of Catherine Vogt (Emerald Isle, N.C. / Univ. of North Carolina) as the head coach of the 2006 Pan Pac Open Water squad. Vogt joins Teri McKeever (El Cerrito, Calif. / Cal-Berkeley) as the only females appointed as head coaches of a major international squad (McKeever will be a head coach for the Pan Pacs team, leading the U.S. women’s pool team).

“In the past, we have never had a woman in a head coaching position at the Olympics, World Championships or Pan Pacific Championships,” said Lindsay Mintenko, USA Swimming’s National Team Managing Director. “This year, USA Swimming named two. With the number of female swimmers who compete in the United States, it is exciting to have two women in this type of leadership role.”

The teams were selected based on results from the Open Water World Championships in June and the 800m and 1500m freestyles at Spring Championships in March.

Kalyn Keller (Phoenix, Ariz. / Trojan) is the lone Olympian from 2004 to make the open water team, however she will be joined by a number of veteran open water swimmers, including open water world champions Chip Peterson (Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. / Carteret Currents) and Erica Rose (Evanston, Ill.), and 2006 open water national champions Kirsten Groome (Blue Bell, Pa. / North Baltimore AC), Chloe Sutton (Ashburn, Va. / The Fish) and Mark Warkentin (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Santa Barbara Swim Club).
