USA Nationals, Day 5: Tim Liebhold is Upset Winner in Men’s 200 IM

By Phillip Whitten

IRVINE, California, August 7. UNIVERSIY of Wisconsin grad Tim Liebhold had never finished higher than fifth in the 200 IM at the US Nationals. Until tonight.

This night belonged to Tim. Third after the 50 fly (26.13) behind Canadian Tobias Oriwol (25.78) and Hungarian Tamas Kerekjarto (26.07), he took the lead on the backstroke leg turning at the 100 in 56.89. Sun Hongzhe followed in 57.20 with Canadian Brian Johns, the top qualifier, third (57.30).

Johns, who holds the short course world record in the 400 IM, made his move on the breaststroke leg, turning first in 1:33.18. Liebhold was just 3-hundredths behind, with Oriwol (1:34.13) and Kerekjarto (1:34.14) in the mix.

Then Liebhold unleashed a devastating kick, splitting 28.54 on the freestyle leg to win decisively in 2:01.75. Johns followed in 2:02.20 with Kerekjarto third in 2:02.80. That tie was equaled by 18 year-old Lucas Salatta, a Brazilian training at Pine Crest, who won the B final.
