USA Nationals, Day 5: Benjamin Wildman-Tobriner Takes Down Schoeman in a Stunning 50 Freestyle Upset

By Phillip Whitten

IRVINE, California, August 7. LORDY, Lordy, Lordy. Just when it seems indisputable that Roland Schoeman is the world’s greatest sprinter, along comes some kid from Stanford to upset the applecart.

Schoeman, who won Worlds with history’s second fastest 50 (and fastest ever in normal competitive conditions) had already won the 100 free and 100 fly here. This race was to be gold medal #3. It almost didn’t pay to bother racing. Just give him the gold and everyone can leave five minutes early.

And then this kid comes along. Benjamin Wildman-Tobriner, by name. Yeah, I know it’s long but it looks like we’ll have to learn it.

Anyway, Ben comes along and out-touches The Man, 22.13 to 22.15.

Lordy, Lordy, Lordy.
