USA Diving Synchro Championships Open Up in Atlanta; Men’s 3-Meter and Women’s 10-Meter on Day One

The opening day of competition at the 2017 USA Diving Synchronized National Championships featured victories from the synchronized pair of Sam Dorman and Michael Hixon on men’s 3-meter, as well as a first-place performance from Jessica Parratto and Tarrin Gilliland on women’s 10-meter. Day one saw five Olympians compete for national titles with Dorman, Hixon, Parratto, Amy Cozad-Magaña and Katrina Young all in action. Both championship duos secured spots in their respective events at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, July 14–22.

Dorman and Hixon dominated the men’s 3-meter field with 809.31 points, including a score of 86.70 on an inward 3½ somersault tuck. The pair scored 79.00 or more points on three of their dives in the final. The second-place team of Lyle Yost and Noah Duperre manufactured a score of 643.53, while third-place finishers Jacob Fielding and Yost collected 641.58 points. Dorman and Hixon will represent Team USA at the 2017 FINA World Championships in the synchronized 3-meter event. The duo won silver together on 3-meter at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Parratto and Gilliland won a talent-loaded women’s 10-meter final, posting a score of 609.06 with Cozad-Magaña and Young coming in second with 568.86 points. Sophia McAfee and Olivia Rosendahl took third at 454.14 and Christy Cutshaw and Emily Bretscher claimed fourth with 428.73 points. The meet marked the first time Parratto and Gilliland have competed together as partners. Like Dorman and Hixon, the two solidified their spot at the 2017 FINA World Championships this summer.

The 2017 USA Diving Synchronized National Championships continue through April 15 at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech, the same pool that hosted aquatic events at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Tomorrow’s events begin at 9:00 a.m. ET and include the women’s 3-meter, men’s 10-meter, boy’s 13&U 3-meter and the girl’s 13&U 1-meter. Olympians Steele Johnsonand Kassidy Cook will be competing, with Johnson in the men’s synchronized 10-meter field and Cook in the women’s synchronized 3-meter event.
