US Olympic Trials, Day 6 Prelims: Crocker Makes a Statement, Flies to a 51.69 Prelim 100m Fly

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 12. THE men’s 100 meter butterfly –one of the most eagerly-anticipated events of these Trials – kicked off this morning, and gave intimations of things to come in the final two rounds.

Swimming in the final heat, Ian Crocker, the world record-holder, staked out his turf, blasting through the first 50 meters in 23.84 seconds – under world record pace. He fell slightly off that pace in the second lap, then had to glide into his finish, but his 51.69 is still history’s fifth-fastest 100 fly, and a time only he and Michael Phelps have bettered.

Phelps, who will be swimming two finals tonight – the 200 back and 200 IM – along with the semifinals of the 100 fly, had the second-fastest time, 53.27. But he did it his way, coasting through the first 50 in 25.67 seconds – tied for 26th fastest among the 48 swimmers. But his 27.60 was the fastest in the event, though only 0.15 quicker than Crocker.

Look for Phelps to be quicker tonight – even with the two finals he’ll be swimming.

Seven swimmers cracked 54 and it took 54.06 to make top eight. Cut-off for the semis was 54.78. A 54-second 100-meter fly just ain’t what it used to be!

Peter Verhoef qualified third in 53.32, followed by Dan Di Toro at 54.45 and Ben Michaelson at 53.48.
